Tracking Device - Help

Hello, please would someone help me by recommending a place possibly in the West Midlands area where I could have a tracking device placed on my Porsche Cayman and are reliable.

I've rang Porsche in Chester and to have a tracker fitted it's £1,015.20 and annual subscription is £200.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thank you

I cannot give any direct help - sorry.

Why are you having a tracker fitted? - peace of mind for you, or a requirement by your insurance company?

If its the insurance company then I would suggest using another one.

Unless you absolutely MUST have a tracker, I'd avoid the damned things like the plague.

My insurance company wanted me to fit one ... I told them to get stuffed. I ultimately found another company who did not need one and who were cheaper too.

Do a search, you'll probably find my rantings on the subject on an earlier thread.

Cheers

John H

Tad harsh there John....watch the blood pressure my friend....Now I'm not as much against these things as John and got a "Tracker" tracker fitted for about £350ish with subscription at £100 or £110 per year, from the 2nd year on, and that was "Tracker Monitor". If you go down the Porsche Tracker route.......yep they are best part of a grand.
I'm in Manchester but if you prepared to travel to Chester than Manchester only another 25 miles and I can sort a good guy for you. even do it Saturday if you like...??

My care had one fitted when I bought it, but guess what, the main dealer tried to sell me a new one!!!

Anyhow, as a new owner I would have to have it reactivated, when I asked my insurance company (Esure) how much discount I would receive i was told £....zero. So while its fitted its not on.

In addition I had to ask myself, if my car was stolen, no doubt driven in ways an owner would not, would I want it back, or prefer the money - given that I would have to PAY the Police to collect ( a possibly damaged car) I am sort of glad I don't have it working!

Finally, I DID have one fitted to my previous car, in the time I owned it (18 months) it registered three false ararms and had the call centres telling me my car was stollen - whilel I was driving it

Indeed, a subject guaranteed to get my blood pressure up!

Of all the things that have ever given me grief on cars over the years, alarms, immobilisers and now trackers are top of the list. I utterly loath all of them.

I have had two Hondas and two Porsches (otherwise utterly reliable) which have stranded me, locked me out of the car, or mysteriously refused to start ... all traced back to crappy aftermarket installations of these devices. And therein lies the real problem, letting some back street grease monkey loose in your fibre-optic controlled precision engineered car, with a bag of Scotch-lok connectors, a pair of pliers and roll of insulating tape. Urggh! ...no thanks!

Now, if you'd like a REALLY good rant ... just ask me what I think of the slimy insurance companies who insist on these works of Satan!

Wow, now that is harsh, we are still talking about main dealers, right?

No, not at all ... but the so called after market specialists. These range from genuine experts (yes there are some, but how do you know?), through car hi fi shops of various provenance, all the way to Halfords, where some spotty oik with a few O-levels will happily install stuff in your car with gay abandon.

My last Porsche (a 964 Carrera) had some mysterious electrical gremlins, which I reckoned were due to various alarms and devices which had been previously fitted. I took it to a trusted auto electrician to have all this gubbins removed, and the wiring loom expertly repaired to factory standards. What we found when we delved into the car was horrifying. The car had had about 3 different alarm/immobilisers fitted over the years, and left behind was a rats nest of untidy, unsafe wiring ... including a live unfused wire trailed over the fuel tank

The same idiots who put all this stuff in are still out there only now installing Trackers and such like things. These people have no real idea of the electronic complexity of the cars they are interfering with, and I would not go near them with a barge pole.

Remember we are not talking about bolting on some wheels or spoilers here, but actually cutting into the main wiring loom and adding additional devices. My attitude to this is that if it was not designed and fitted by the factory ... I don't want it in my car ... no matter what the insurers say.

(PS ... apologies for thread hi-jacking, it's just this subject really gets me riled! )

Thank you very much for your responses, I'm sorry if I've mentioned a sore subject but it’s certainly helped me make my mind up.

The reason I’ve asked for people’s help is insurance purposes. I’ve just received my car insurance renewal with Saga Insurance and they’ve increased my insurance.

I‘ve contacted other insurance companies for quotes and everyone asked me if I had a Tracker on my car.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend an insurance company that doesn’t ask for a Tracker? If not, I think I’ll stay with Saga.

Thanks again Andy

Sainsburys does not require a Tracker

There are also quite a few other, not sure if the price comparison sites indicate this in their quotes or not
