This is bad news for new car buyers in the south but good news for second hand buyers in the north!
Lower emission may have force Porsche to introduce DFI technology to their 987 line-up earlier than what they want! It seems that the Green Party got what they want despite we did not voted for them!
Meeting emission target is also one of the reason that I think non-s boxster and cayman will stay at 2.7l for quite some time. I am quite confident that the dfi cayman s will drop below the 225g target!
DFI
Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), is a new technology that Porsche states can cut fuel consumption by up to 15 percent, while increasing power by up to 13 percent. DFI cuts emissions by warming up the catalytic converter more quickly, and ensures a sharper throttle response. Better for your right foot - and the planet, then.
DFI allows much more precise measurement of fuel supply and injection at pressures up to 120 bar; it has numerous combustion modes, with different cycles for cold-starting, low-speed driving and performance driving.
As the name suggests, DFI injects fuel directly into the individual combustion chambers, instead of the intake manifold. The injector valves have an electromagnetic mechanism that controls each injection with astonishing precision, while a high-pressure pump provides the necessary pressure—up to 1,740 psi—to accompany the rapid fire of the fuel injection.
Precise geometry of the injector’s position and its spray pattern is a key factor in helping to improve power, torque and emissions of the engines. The specific placement of the fuel as it enters each chamber creates a swirl that improves the air/fuel mixture, and therefore the overall combustion process.
At engine speeds up to 3500 rpm, a double-injection process is used. In this mode, the required fuel volume is delivered in two successive injections per working stroke. The resulting benefits include faster catalyst warm-up and increased torque in the upper load range.
By forming the air/fuel mix directly in the combustion chamber, DFI contributes to engine cooling. As a result, it is possible to increase the compression ratio and with it the power and efficiency of the engine.
The direct injection process is continuously adjusted. The engine management system reads changes to throttle inputs and performance requirements and, as you drive, the air/fuel mix is monitored and adapted as required. Oxygen sensor circuits within the exhaust system provide accurate emissions control.
I think the increase in congestion charges should be challenged, but not by Porsche.
Here in the UK (I'm just West of London) we are going through a Green frenzy. Everybody is trying to promote a Greener life style, Government Policies all of a sudden took a Greener stance, England has recently had a smoking ban. In parts of England the bins (garbage) collection have been reduced to once a fortnight rather than weekly, in an attempt to make us cut down on waste. The idea being we recycle more, the reality is we throw away just as much but have larger vermin and pay the same amount of council tax.
The worst part is the moral guilt trip. We are made to feel bad for wanting more. I smoke, I let out a property and I drive a nice car. Don't get me wrong, I recycle (although I am forced to by my girlfriend). I do infact promote a greener planet but I think freedom of choice is more important.
I feel the Mayor would tell me “We are not banning these vehicles”. Of course your not, you need the money that I earn. The LAST thing you'd want is for us all to use public transport. If we all ditched our vehicles and used the bus or tube there is no way the current infrastructure could cope. We love our cars Mayor Ken knows it.
Considering that most of Porsche's current vehicles are above the 225g CO2 limit I don't think they really represent Freedom Fighters. I guess they are at least opposing the additional charges, which is a good thing even if it's for their benefit.
SO.......... how do they know a CS a C6 or a C5..............?
Will all owners take the S Designation off, to save paying?
(Or in the case of Tess Tickle add GT to confuse everybody.....)
How do they with a 2.7 Cayman, know the difference between a 5 speed gearbox (£8 Charge) and a 6 Speed (£25 Charge) Or if I only use 5 of the 6 forward gears?
I'm going to put a 'Turbo' sticker on my CS, to put 2 fingers up to the lot of them...........

i recognize that you have rights and you are certainly entitled to your personal opinion, but with all due respect, i and many others do not agree with your stance that 'freedom of choice should supercede a healthy, sustainable environment' which is, to be certain, an absolutely essential requirement of life on this planet.
the world's eco-systems are under intense assault and failing at an alarming rate. appropriate actions to diminish this destruction and restore some reasonable and appropriate degree of equalibrium must be implimented - or the unintended consequences of our selfish actions will cause great harm to others as well as ourselves.
embrace the new reality. it is our salvation.

Sorry, BUT US citizens per capita are the worst Polluters in the WORLD even if each of you does NOTHING............. And you, each moment (even breathing and living - without even driving) do more harm to the environment than any European on a one for one basis.
Do not take the High Ground, also think of the emerging economies in India and China that will develop without regulation.
May your trousers suffer an infestation of rodents.............. Try riding your bicycle afterwards..................
Keep out of the UK Threads................

Red Ken's jihad is not on behalf of the environment, it's just class warfare (and everyone knows it, consciously or not). Excise taxes on fuel deter CO2 emissions (for what that's worth, and that ain't much, c.f. Bjorn Lomborg et al.). Excise taxes on cars make no sense economically or environmentally -- just do a comparative survey of the odometers on commuter boxes vs. automotive exotica. And for that matter compare the working lifespan of commuter boxes vs. exotica. That's right, the average real world commuter box emits a lot more CO2 per year than the average Porsche-or-what-have-you, and it winds up in the junkyard nearly an order of magnitude faster, entailing an immense environmental load almost completely avoided by the exotica.
and Karel, don't be sorry for tellin' it like it is
Okay, easy now. This is hardly the place to push your personal views on the environment. We are entitled to our opinion but this one is teetering on the edge to political rants. Not the place and I for one don't want to read about it.
Thanks...
