I used to work in Livingston (just west of Edinburgh) in the mid 80's so this is a bit out of date...maybe

Pub...my favorite Greyfriar's Bobby Greyfriars Bobby Bar - presented by Edinburgh Pub Guide ...

Great story behind the name...check it out

There also used to be a place nicknamed "Diggers" 'cause the grave diggers would go there after work... tremendous local atmosphere...your hotel people should know it if it still exists....

No trip to edinburgh is complete without visiting Hawes Inn....The Hawes Inn, which dates back to 17th century, was an inspiration for Edinburgh author Robert Louis Stevenson when in 1886, while staying in Room 13, he came up with the idea for Kidnapped. The hero of the book also stays at the inn. Easy cab ride

Other pubs: Too many to list... almost all excellent. lots around the Haymarket area

Try the Belhaven Ale...a wonderful local treat.

Try "Haggis with Nips and Tatties" at your own risk.

Indian food....can't beat Lancers

Good luck....

+1 on that bit of advice. There are a couple places that actually have this on tap in Phoenix. Tops on my list!

Cold Croc...thanks for the advice...on my short trip (I'm back already) I went to Greyfriars - great pub...they had live music when we were there. And I did manage to go to Lancers...I haven't had that good of meal since I was in London (I love the Bombay Palace there).

This list will go with me next I'm over there which will probably be this summer sometime

Thanks again...that's why I love this forum...and I don't even have my car yet (next few weeks)

I live within an hour of Edinburgh, am a regular visitor, but I regret I'm a bit out of touch with the bars and restaurants these days. As others have said though, there are lots of good places.

If you are going to be a regular visitor to Scotland's capital, perhaps you might be interested in this Amazon.com: 44 Scotland Street: Alexander Mccall Smith: Books

This is the first of a series of books by what is probably Scotland's most popular author of the moment, and was initially a serialised story in "The Scotsman" newspaper. Very local, very laid back, almost a Scottish version of the sort of stuff Garrison Keiller was doing some years back.

The guide books will give you the facts, but this might give you more of the feel of contemporary Edinburgh. Enjoy!
