Well temptation is slowly getting the better of me here in Bahrain. My lovely red cayman s has been garaged in the UK since November and I miss it dearly. I tried to ship it but right handers are banned here for some odd reason. On the positive side cars are VERY cheap, so much so that Im on the verge of caving in at the local porsche dealer. I am about to make you terribly sick but bear with me....
I can get a new Porsche turbo with sensible options for 60k - and drive off the forecourt. I almost got a black one yesterday but got knobbled at the last minute by the original 'buyer' who stalled and closed the deal as soon as I appeared. If I order my own it will be delivered in September...
I must say that I would love a GT3 or GT3RS. Interestingly the GT3 is 55k here or say 57k with options...but they are fully sold out with no more being made. The attraction of the GT3 is the out of the box performance and track worthiness - no messing with superglue, crayons, wings and re-maps. Its bullet proof. But none left.
My problem is that I love my cayman so much and enjoy driving the fella to the limit - often humbling turbo's and GT3's in the process which is more of a reflection on the car than on me. The thrill and surefoot nature of the 'little one' is too hard to resist. Now brace yourselves...list price of the Cayman S here is 28k...and Porsche typically give you between 5-10% discount on that figure. I have my eye on a white Cayman S with carerra red interior, aero-kit etc (optioned to death) which I have a price agreed at 31k. Problem is when you sit in it you cannot help but think that you have been swallowed by a Jonah the Whale. The red interior is indeed a little garish. Could order a new one for September which would be 09 spec - whatever differences that will make (allegedly significant in terms of trim and technology). Logic would be to strip my UK cayman of its mods and ship them to Bahrain where...wait for it...the porsche OPC have offered to modify my car and maintain it for track days! That wouldnt happen in Surrey now would it! All a bit hard to believe.
So to re-cap: do you 1. go for the cayman at 31k and import your bits. 2. buy a turbo for 60k. 3. wait for a used GT3 to hit the showroom at around 50k or 4. give it all up and take up water-skiing....
Im sure the decision would be easy for some of you guys - would be interested to get a vote count. Come on, a Turbo for 60k? Dont tell me thats not burning a hole in your shorts...

It so happens that I got an Porsche invitation last week to try three different 911's (997) on track. First off was a 997 Turbo Cabrio manual, shatteringly fast in a straight line, but curiously unsatisfying on the track. Next was a 997 Targa 4, smooth and pleasant, but not a car I'd own. It was the last car that had me literally whooping with delight, and perhaps the first car I've driven since I bought the Cayman that had me thinking of reaching for my wallet.
It was a Carrera S, but with the powerkit engine, ceramic brakes, aero package, sport zorst, the whole nine yards. It may have had a bit less power than the turbo, but it was an infinitely better drive, not only on the track where it was like a scalpel, but it also had a very good ride on the road too. I'm told by those who know, that this is a very close feeling to the GT3, which in turn is just a bit sharper and faster again. It is also the first 997 I have ever really "got" ... at last I know what people see in them, albeit there are huge differences between the various models.
I had been really looking forward to driving the turbo, but in the end it did not somehow light my fire. The powerkit Carrera certainly did though, and in another week or two I'll be joing a friend and his new GT3 for a bit of shenanigans up the NW Scottish coast, which I'm really looking forward to now.
My advice from all of this would be to try the Turbo before you buy ... it may not be quite the car you think it is!
If you were to order a Cayman for Sept. delivery and a used GT3 showed up, could you back out of your Cayman order and go for the GT3?
If so, I'd order the Cayman and tell the OPC if a GT3 comes in on trade that you will buy that, and if one doesn't come in; then I'd be happy to have the 09 Cayman with the exact specs I wanted.

To be honest, I would in your place, get a Red - Base Cayman S - Perhaps with just Short Shifter installed - And get NEW bits (Don't mess around transferring stuff - far too costly) to rebuild the 'Red Dragon' LHD...........
Even after the mods you will still have lots of Change in your pocket, and after seeing you at Brands Hatch in December.......... You will see off allcomers on the track again in a Super Car you know.......
You know you are bound to come to grief in a GT3 or a Turbo....
Wish I had your problems...............!!!! Choices/Choices.....

I am thinking of buying a new (or used..depending on final decision) CS and selling my black CS.
Anyway I could convince you to order me a CS at that price then have it shipped back to the US??????? If I knew shipping costs, it might be tempting to send you the money. I am looking at $60-$70k here with all but a few really specialized options.

Better yet.....you and I decide on the car of choice......decide on the proper options and color....decide on the price I pay, versus price you pay...you drive it for x number of months with your own insurance say until winter...when you are done, I pay for shipping back to USA. You walk away.
What do you say?
Counter offer welcome. And no I am not joking...

A GT3 for $55-$57K. Holy moly that is cheap. You could really make money on those differences if it is possible to ship and import a Bahrain car. If it is not optioned correctly, it may become a gray market car.
Remember that those prices are GBP not dollars chaps. We are used to some of the highest car prices in the world in the UK so the tax free scenario in Bahrain is refreshing (and for once affordable). Well guys the deal has been struck...and its a bit off the wall. I have gone for the white Cayman S with carrera red interior (it looks a bit like one of those poor seals the canadians have been butchering recently) although its growing on me.....will post pics sometime soon. Its not my ideal spec but a good base to modify from. However (and here is the outrageous bit) - I ordered a GT2 which will hopefully be here for January 09 so got a good deal on the Cayman as a gap car. I think its a deathwish but the worst thing that can happen is that I have a love affair with the cayman and sell my production slot for gt2 to somebody else...
So what should I do with my UK cayman? Its a damn good machine that has been honed for the track. August 2006 with 9000 miles. Red with black wheels and detailing. Harness bar + harness. Quaiffe diff, short shift, GT3 nose, H&R springs and roll bars, fabspeed headers, cargraphic cat-back, revo custom re-map, evo-m air-intake / filter, IPD plennum, michelin cups, spare set of wheels, gt3 carbon seats, track geometry set up, stainless hoses, pagid blu pads, race fluid, manti rear stress bar. Should I try and sell it as a track car or strip it to base and sell it as a standard cayman and sell on the magic parts? What do you reckon its worth?
