PCM - Speed Cameras

Hi,

Anyone been able to burn a copy of their PCM DVD and add speed cameras as POI?

I would prefer to not have another satnav / speed detector device attached to the windscreedn and run everything through PCM.

Thanks,
John

So would I, but as far as I know this can not be done easily.
And yes, it is a real hassle to have this additional Nav unit, with all the wiring and so.
Only advantage is that you now also have an exact speed reference, important when driving through Sjoholt, trying to avoid the local sheriff.

But, remember that in some countries, like Switzerland, it is now illegal to have any kind of speed camera warning devices.
Kind of annoying, because if enough people set off enough flashes, they will eventually work out something to be able to fine, or worse, foreign citisens.

Speed cameras should be banned, they do no good for traffic safety, at least not here in Nisse, where they are located only to collect money.

Exclamation Red Light Camera Use Results in MORE Accidents with MORE Bodily Injury

From what I can tell Red Light Cameras appear to be resulting in MORE accidents, not less. What's more, they cause MORE BODILY INJURY!

Unfortunately, it will take years of losses and more years of reviews and ultimately a few well placed successful High Profile Law Suits complete with large awards to bring both the Public around and law enforcement and the government money making minions to effect common sense change.

Mark my words, this is what we will learn in the future. While Red Light Cameras "sound" like a good idea and are "feel good" attempts at expanding government they result in literally far more harm.

We in the States are seeing a significant increase in rear end accidents as people pull more panic stops just to beat the flash. We've even had one fatal accident on the 101 in Scottsdale attributed to the Speed Cameras near Shea Boulevard.

To get back more on topic, my understanding is that certain GPS systems with subscriptions permit one to download and update one's GPS unit with Red Light Camera locations and warnings on the fly. I think the new NAV in the 911 update for 2008 may have that info available via XM. Certainly Tom-Tom has it.

I had not heard that any camera avoiding, camera tracking devices were illegal. That's news. Leave it to the Swiss.

Having driven on the Isle of Man where outside of the villages there are no speed limits, the standard of driving is much higher, traffic makes excellent progress and people are more awake.

I don't suppose the humourless Swiss are bothered by the loss of a bit of tourist money from motorists not wanting to be victims.

This can easily be observed on the German Autobahn as well.
In other countries, like France, Denmark, the drivers are less observant, not paying attention.

In the US state of Montana the speed limt once was "Reasonable and Prudent".
Introducing speed limits actually significantly increased accident rates.

Of course, in the Scandinavian Nisse countries Sweden and Norway, with 110 and 100 km/h limits, the driving is most dangerous, with coffe-drinking and mobile-chatting relatives of Santa behind the wheel.

Germans do drive better, the main difference on the continent to the UK is that there are less lanes so people have to get over rather than sit in the outside lane cruising along.
Motorway drivers in the UK use the brakes too much too! Don't they know they cost money!
The worst thing are the variable speed limits on the motorway now and the digital gantry cameras on the M25/A3-M4 section . There is no need for that.
As someone who drive 3 juncs on that road everyday I cannot believe the amount of drivers braking hard when they get to the overhead camera and then speeding up again between them cause no end of problem and accidents.

Having a device that tells you the max speed is only useful if
a) everybody drives with due care and attention
b) the max speed is actually manageable. Too many times the 60mph limit is not feasingle due to traffic and bad driving.

I assume the PCM system is very similar to the blaupunkt units which you cannot add POIs to. I tried for weeks to add POIs using all the tricks learnt from Tomtom, Magellan and Garmin units. I even asked some of my colleagues at Vodafone device mgmt to try and get some POIs into the Blaupunkt but it kept on causing it to crash. Tele Atlas have some good encryption or at least they used to have.

Perhaps the new PCM coming later this year with the harddrive will allow updates... One can hope

Waste of time really. Better to get a self updating speed camera locator than have the fuss of burning new map DVD's every week. I bought an inforad GPS locator for a few pounds , it fits in the cubby hole under the center console and works perfectly. For information the maps for Porsche vehicles are made by Navteq not teleatlas.

Hey Berty,
dont u have to keep it on the dash for it to pick the signals..??? or do u have an external antennae...?

Yes, I have the external antennae to give quicker boot up time , its located on top of the instrument cowl at the moment. I plan to fix it on the underside of the windscreen lower cowl this weekend , in line with the similar OEM location of the GPS antennae. The cables are routed and tucked away following the profiles of the dash so they are virtually unseen. When the antennae is relocated all that wil be visible wil be the device itself.

Would be interested in this but it seems to be mainly based on fixed speed cameras.. I find the the camera vans/lasers the biggest threat as they tend to be fairly sneaky in terms of where they hide - around bends, on bridges, etc. The tom -tom I use in the other car covers all of these but is a bit cumbersome to use when you alkready have a built in "sat nav" system

Form their site
"Inforad uses the industry standard database of UK (and most of Europe) fixed speed camera locations and accident black spots"

My inforad often alerts where there are also vans located. Like most databases it is also user updated where mobile cameras are often found. Not 100 % fool proof maybe , but at a little over 50 pounds excellent value for money.

I have a clifford Sapphire with gps, It cost 150 quid and £99 lifetime registration. It is good for the fixed camaras and claims to determain all the known cameras in the universe, so far it has only pointed out the GATSO's to me, so i am guessing that i either havent passed any other mobile unit or it doesnt work which obviously makes me a little nervous.
I needed tit to determain radar guns as they are the biggest pain in the ***. I lost my liescence due to those so i am very warry.
