Problem with Suspension/Tracking Arms

Hello

I've not long had my Cayman S.

I took it to my local Porsche Dealer and had an inspection carried out.

They said the Suspension/Tracking Arms have some play in them and it will cost a substantial amount to put it right.

For a car that is less then 3 years old with only 15,000 miles on the clock - should it require substantial repair? Is this a common problem?

Any advice appreciated.

Sukh

I assume you have no extended warrenty?

I would not be happy with that situation and I would not expect it to be common.

If this fault was not picked up at the 2 year service, then I wonder just what the previous owner (you say you have not had it long) had been doing to introduce such a problem

I would want the dealership to explain if possible what the route cause is, no point in a fix if it could just deteriorate again.

Keep us informed

Hello

No warranty.

Your correct about the 2 year service, it was only done 4 months ago. I have the original report from the Porsche Dealership and no mention of this problem then. Only 2000 miles since then as well.

They said the root cause could be kerbing of the wheel or driving styles could cause the issue. They were a bit vague though. Surely these cars are built to last/withstand a variation in driving styles. I may get it checked out at an independent garage first.

I would be supprised if it came down to just driving styles.

When I first read it, I thought more likely to do with a knock / heavy kerbing.

I do not think Porsche would be happy that a dealer said just a persons basic driving style could cause such problems without some other factor, sad inditement of the cars design otherwise.

I think the dealer is cluthing at straws here we need more input from more knowlegeable forum members on this

Is it the same dealer than did the 2 year inspection that is now telling you that you have too much suspension play? I would think about trying a different dealer, as there are many members here who drive their cars hard, have more miles, and who don't have any such problem. I would also ask to see the Porsche specs on the suspension and how much play is allowed before repair/replacement is needed then be shown how much play yours actually has. Otherwise they may be trying to sell you a set of piston return springs or muffler bearings next....

Different dealer's did the service and inspection.

I somehow think they maybe trying to get some business out of me, after all they did do the inspection for free

I think heavy kerbing/knock could easily cause this issue, but what do they exactly mean by "play"? Is it a serious? They obviously pointed out I should get this fixed sooner rather than later.

I had my rear suspension arms replaced after 11,000 miles due to excessive play.I believe it was something to do with the bushings.
