Can't make up my mind!

Went to see the new facelift 997, don't find it look very different from the current car which is no bad thing as I think the 997 is the best looking 911!
Can't make up my mind whether I should go for the the base Carrera or wait for the facelift Cayman S
This what going thru my brain at the moment

For Base 997
-0-100km/h under 5s
-2 rear seats
-more powerful with lower co2 than my cayman s
Against Base 997
-Need to buy a darker color which attract stonechip and harder to clean
-Really worth £18000 more than the Cayman S???
-Don't handle as well as my current car

For Facelift Cayman S
-More powerful than my current car
-Will specify Xenon and PASM this time
-Looks more modern than the 997
-Not as common as the 997 and will pobably depreciate less
-Will handle better than anything on the market
Against facelift Cayman S
-Some alteration from the current model like the tail-lights looks awkward
-A Ford Focus RS can give me a hard time in the motorway

Guys, help me to make my mind up!

Andy -

I agree with your pros/cons but it looks as if you have virtually convinced yourself that the CaymanS is the better car for you unless you need 2 extra seats or wish to pay £18k more.

If two seats are ok then, keep your current CaymanS as even with low mileage your cars value will be little over £30-32k if it is an 06 car.

or order the revised CaymanS for delivery at least one year from now as that is when they will be available I have been told. Yes second time like the first time for me, I would get PASM and Xenon's.

Also if you go for the 997 then look at the standard features differences between the 997 and 997S. My view is that there is a strong case to go for the 997S for approx £6k more but then you will need at least £72k for one.

Roger

Hi Roger,
Thanks for your reply! I think it doesn't make sense to go for the base 997. But if I am going to spend £75 000 for the C2S, I will sell my soul to the devil and stretch my budget to buy the Audi R8. It is not that straight forward as I thought it would be. Just wish I can foresee the future and can see what the facelift cayman looks like-----Im just worried that they might mess up the looks of a really good looking car!

I would have to go for the 997S to make it worth while.

I have not driven a 997 in any variant but from what I understand it’s not £16,500 the better car.

I do think it’s a great looking car and agree it’s the best looking 997. Although wonder if this is physiological due to it being the current model??

Just another thing. Yes, the Focus RS may give you a hard time on the motorway. But come the release of the Focus RS (Spring 2009) the £25,000 that it will cost could buy you a decent used 996 or Cayman anyway. I’d say it’s not a reason to eliminate the Cayman S.

I’m going off on a tangent here but…. If you want to get the 911 thing out of your system then fair-play. I often feel the same. I may sell my Cayman S this time next year and buy a used 997S - it’s totally irrational thought behaviour but there is an allure of a 911 that is very difficult to resist. If you want a 911 then do it.

For me the Cayman looks much better than the 911 and there a less on the road. Think a year ahead. The 911 market is going South. These days a 911 is an affordable car. Right now there are 997C2’s up for < £36,000. Isn’t there going to be a 998 around 2009 - 2010 as well?? The exclusivity of the 911 is well on the way out.

In ten years time when there are some horrendous laws imposed on the manufacturers and we all have to buy hydrogen powered cars. People will say “forget the 911, that Porsche Cayman was the best drivers car you could buy.”

The facelift 997 does not have enough to differentiate it from the non facelift to justify buying a new one. Again I have not driven one so this may all be b******s!!

I am going to clean my CS now.

I went to look at the new 997's yesterday. I must say it is a mighty subtle facelift, blink and you miss it, although I accept the real differences are technical. I'll reserve full judgement till I've driven one.

Yet again though I was struck by just what a bargain the Cayman seems, when stacked up against the 997. A base Carrera is as near as dammit TWICE the price of a 2.7 Cayman, yet if you strip away some of the trim differences, there is no getting away from the fact that much of the car is inherently the same, but with the engine turned round and with bigger bores and pistons. I cannot imagine that the manufacturing costs of a Carrera are that much more than a Cayman ... no wonder Porsche is so profitable.

I think the best value for money Porsche is the Boxster S. 200cc less then the base carrera cab and just 0.5 second slower to 100km/h. It cost less than £40000---£30000 cheaper!

Just spent a most amusing hour or so blatting round the back roads of East Lothian (on my own) in one of the new revised 997's (thanks Edinburgh OPC).

It was a Carrera 2 S with the new PDK gearbox, and it sure is one helluva car. Effortlessly fast, which is both good an bad I suppose, so easy to go way quicker than you intended, I can see this being a handful in the hands of the inexperienced. Still very much a 911, with the pattery front end and all. The new flat 6 engine is utterly stunning, makes a lovely noise and feels incredibly free revving. Gearbox works best left in auto, but on sport setting, the changes are seamless and the change up points superbly judged (a bit lethargic in regular setting, but OK for cruising). The facelift is very subtle, but the interior changes are good, the new touchscreen PCM is fantastic, light years on from the present offering, and one of the few things I'd really like in my own Cayman.

I came away very impressed, but not perhaps enamoured. Somehow the ability to go so very very fast, with such little input from the driver seems rather to miss the point, at least in a country like ours with such a mania for speed limits. That apart, it is one of the most impressive things I've driven in some time.

How can you Say This?

Your Current Cayman S has Faster Acceleration and a Greater Top Speed than the Projected Ford Focus RS...........

I wouldn't mess with them even if I got a C2S. According to Autocar this week, it got 302Ib of torque. Just like most turbo car, this will be available low down in the rev range.

So if Im cruising along the M62, I probably have to drop down a gear or 2 to catch the RS driver off guard. Otherwise if we both accelerate together from 70mph in 6th, I bet he will be faster than me!

Andy Lee.........

Focus RS 0 - 60 = 5.8 Seconds..........

My Cayman will beat that any day of the week..............

The Top Speed of a Focus RS is 155 mph.........

Are you telling me that your Cayman doesn't do 175mph?

There is a similarity - The Focus is Fitted as Standard with a Quaife ATB/LSD (Like the Cayman Should Have Been............) As most of us have.....

5.8s is very fast for a front wheel drive car!!! I can't think of any faster!
Of course our car will be quicker off the line due to better traction and will be faster still if we nail our car properly. There is no doubt our car will have a higher top speed. All those spoliers will slow the Focus down after 100mph.

My advise is don't underestimate some of the hothatches out there. You do not want to be embarrassed!
The current issue of Autoexpresss tested the new Mini Cooper Works and manage 50-70mph in sixth=5.7s This is quicker than our cars=6.4s(Figure from Autocar)!

But the great thing is they (other people) will be in a Ford, we will be driving a Porsche and they are trying to show they have some advantage over us, yet we will be sat snugly in our cars cruising along there will always be a car out there that is faster than you (who ever you are)
