Running In Part II

OK, so I was reading through the UK manual, and it apears to differ from the US one that was downloadable a couple of weeks agao.

Primarily, there is NO, NONE, NADA... reference to rev limit during the run-in period!

Please check yourselves, but it just says for the first 3000km avoid short journeys, avaoid excessive engine speed when the engine is cold, and a load of other vague bits and bobs that really apply to any engine of any age at any time.

So, no need to stick below 4500rpm for 1800 miles, and I read it that as long as the engine is warm (and don't forget it takes a lot longer for the oil to reach temperature than it does for the water, so at least 10 minute runs before you start to go for it throught eh revs) you can go and enjoy yourself!

Any comments?

That's strange, I can't see how there is any difference between European and US models - apart from the higher price !

Jack,

how many miles have you clocked up so far? how many revs you taking it up to? as I said before, I am going to bed the tyres and brakes in over 200 miles (up to 3,500 revs)and then start taking it up 1,000 revs per 100 miles.

no need to run in, just ensure oil temp is up, need to stretch the revs every now & again.

note, no dealer demo cars are 'run in'

Hey Steve A, how much did you pay for the base Cayman? Just curious.

The base price in the UK is just under £44,000 which includes half leather and top-tinted screen. At an exchange rate of $1.70 to the £ that equates to $51,700. By my reckoning that's about $10,000 more than the US price. The extras such as PASM etc are all very similiar in price. The only good thing is that we get clear lenses as standard and NO BUMPERETTES !!!!!

Sorry Justin, missed your question before!
Well I ran the first 200 miles well under 5000rpm, probably max 4500rpm. Now I into 300+ I am begining to stretch it a bit.

I was rather naughty tonight! off the M56 towards Wilmslow you pass through 2 tunnels under manchester airports runways. Well just had to drop the windows, slot second, and leet it rip!

This is the first car I have been in where the external noise being generated is louder than the internal engine noise and wind noise over 5000rpm in second (in those tunnels).
And it was louder by soem way! The noise is FANTASTIC. A real racecar scream, not the Spitfire noise of SL and SLK55s I've heard through there, and not like the cultured note of Astons.

So, needless to say it's been within a hairs-breadth of the limiter today. Only 320 mles and counting!

Jack

. . . FWIW my dealer told me to run it like I've owned it for 12 months so that's what I've done. The best advice is to vary how you drive it so the ECU, engine, etc doesn't get into any set routines. Rev'ed mine over 7k between gears sometimes and had 160+mph out of it in the small hours this morning - it's just way too adictive and can't help myself. Can't wait until this engine has 6k miles on it and losened up some. On my 3rd tank of Optimax fuel already in 4 days!!

WHAT A MACHINE!
