OK, so this is just a preliminary enquiry to see if there is any interest in a slightly LARGER group outing than we normally have.
I have a craving to visit the Nurburging, and fancy doinf it with a bunch of other fellow owners if possible.
First of all, anybody interested?
I was thinking of June or July, for something like leave Thursday night, get into France, stop over Thursday night en-route in France. Then get to Nurburgring early Friday. Spend Friday night Saturday night near the track, then head home Sunday as late as people like.
I’m up for it Jack, but I have it on very good advice NOT to take my car. Certainly for the first visit and maybe even for the second visit. People say either take a shed or fly and hire a car!!!! So probably like you the whole point is to drive the Cayman round and this is the bit that puts me off. Apparently if you touch the grass and leave a mark you’ll finish up with a bill of astronomical proportions, never mind if you scratch the Armco…What do you think
I'm interested, my mate has just picked up got a Boxster S (3.4) and we were talking about a trip in March possibly - could easily do it in the summer instead.
I'm happy to take the car even though it would be my first trip - that's why I bought a PS2 and GT4... to practice the circuit, well maybe not quite the same but I'll give it a go.
That said I'd be heading out there with the intention of not trying to break any lap records, a bit of a sensible head on should result in a straight CS at the end of the weekend (hopefully). And about the grass... I race an autograss car so a common philosophy in the sport is that 'dirt is for racing on, tarmac gets you there'
I’m up for it Jack, but I have it on very good advice NOT to take my car.
Why shouldn't you?? You own a sportscar, so why do you think about hiring an other? ...
I don't think it's possible to get a cayman at the circuit for hire. So you need to get some experience on a new car.
Good, so it looks like we could get a decent crowd for the tri. I'll also ask in the other Cayman/Porsche forums to see it there are more interested.
Allan, I'm willing to risk it, no problem. I mean, it can't be THAT different to the Cat'n'Fiddle can it???? In fact, it's probably easier. At least they are all going in the same way, there are no "Jumps" and it's wider........
But if you insist on hiring, don't worry about flying out, you can grab a lift with me
Richard, can you hang on 'til June?
Anybody want to put forward a couple of dates for starters? Anybody know anything about Nurburging, like are they open every weekend to public?
Mithotyn, any more advise you would like to offer?
Wurlie, where are you from? You have no flag in your sig.....
The ring isn't open all year around, its used for events and the public days are limited, but generally plentyful.
As for car hire, plenty of people do hire cars to race around the 'ring so as to not to risk their own pride and joy. Hertz in germany hire 911s, and specifically on all hire forms it says the insurance is not valid for "private toll roads" which what the ring is. I've known people to hire Audi TTs in say, Amsterdam and drive them there for a weekend of thrashing...and they have gone back needing new tyres and discs and pads!
One thing to consider is insurance. On sunny days everyone is out there, including motorbikes and 40 seater coach tours. You may have decided to take it easy and have a drive round well within the limits of the car but what happens when some retard in an Evo looses it and wipes you out? its his fault but unless he has track day insurance it could be an expensive trip to mthe courts.
Plenty of my collegues and friends have made the trip and really say its a fab weekend. Everyone who is around the hotels, the town in the evening or the car park and pits during the day have one thing in common; a love for cars. We may all have different tastes but its alledgedly a fantastic experience.
Good if some of the US members could come over and meet up (and even hire cars off Hertz!)
