Best fuel?

I had my car dyno'd again today and had a lengthy discussion regarding the importance of 'good' fuel. I had been using BP optimax which I have been advised is really awful. Apparently Shell V power is the best fuel to be using according to the guy that runs the dyno shop having undertaken several fuel comparisons for various magazines etc. It appears the difference between V Power and Ultimax in a Porsche could be in the region of 10bhp - and in Subaru impreza's is circa 30bhp!!!!

The Evo fuel test indicated that BP was the best normal fuel on the dyno, but Shell felt good to the driver. Conclusion was that the most important point was to buy from a popular garage to get fresh fuel.

Anyway, I try to use Shell because of the cleaning additives - and it does smell different, doesn't it

You can even try 102RON race fuel from BP-------Only available down south!!! Check their website! The car feel amazing! We need an outlet up north!!!

For those of you unfamaliar with fuel, here is my summary:-

Normal superunleaded 97RON-Most have cleaning agent but not those from supermarkets.
Shell v-power 99RON with cleaning agent-Good if you have your car Revo-ed!!!!
Tesco99 99RON no cleaning agent

Normal unleaded 95RON ----Porsche recommend 97RON+
Why buy a sport Chrono or a porsche if you are just using normal unleaded? You lose bhp using normal unleaded esp your car is a turbo!

As I mentioned - the guy advising me had undertaken INDEPENDENT tests on fuel performance. Just dont forget who sponsors EVO magazine.

The BP 102octane fuel is stocked by a garage near where I work. Its £2.45/litre..... They sell some to the Ferrari customers in the area, but my understanding was that Porsche are optimised at 99RON fuel, and paying double for the 102stuff is wasting money.

Having said that, I might put in 1/2 tank for research purposes!

The US rating systems are a bit different than yours.
Here in Arizona, the standard "Premium Unleaded" is 91 octane (RON + MON / 2) with the cars optimized for 93 octane (R+M/2), so on track days, I start with 4 gallons of 100 octane Sunonco Race fuel (available locally for $5.99/gal), then top up with 91 octane to give me 93 octane delivered to the engine. Any higher octane would be a waste, as the chip is optimized for 93. Besides, the higher the octane, the slower the fuel burns, hence the popular misconception that higher octane giving more performance is silly unless the vehicle's timing can be retarded enough to make use of it!

You are quite right! This is why I said there is no point using the race fuel unless the ecu is remapped to take advantage of the higher octane rating. European Porsches or VW group cars that use direct injection eg. Golf GTI are recommended by their manufacturer to use 98+ RON for maximum efficiency!

How do you like your revo re-map? I got mine done recently and it definitely has more torque wedge on the low end. Sadly dyno results show +8bhp......
Im curious to know your experiences.

Hi TT
I did not dynoed my car!! So did the car feel any faster??

I can confirm what you said. Sharper throttle response lower down(Below 4000rpm) but no much difference above that--saying this, it is very difficult to tell the difference on a 295bhp with a 8bhp peak increase! I also notice the snarl from the engine came earlier with less throttle travel---psychological???

I am happy with the improved drivability of the car but it is definitely not the best vfm conversion---it costs me a grand which inc. the sps device (In my glove box) which I can convert it back to standard before my service or if I have a crash. I think if you are not bother about insurance company or dealer knowing your car is chipped, a superchip might be better vfm--£295 inc VAT and fitting!

I also had a look at the AMD website before I bought the REVO as they are cutting the cost of their one click device from £1000 to £750. I opt for REVO with the SPS device cause it offer much more than 2 prog-standard and tuned. There are maps for different fuel grade and a seperate one for light mods.

Which prog does your car run??? Any other mods on your car?

Don't get too disappointed with the peak power ---most normal aspirated engine can only run properly within certain parameter set by the manufacterer. There aren't much room for tuner to play with unlike turbocharge engine. Most firms advertised 10-15bhp inc. which sounds about right!
