Based on comments above, is there some reason when changing the 2,3,4 and maybe 5th gears you cannot (or would not) change 6th? I find the CS 6th gear to be such that I often feel like the thing is still in 4th or maybe 5th. I dont know the terms, so based on context, it seems that means I think the gear is too short for my liking. I would love to have 6th in the CS be sitting at 2500 rpm at 85mph.
On the other hand when you are cruising in the CS and some dingbat slows you down....no need to change gears....just punch it and off you go. So there is an advantage with stock 6th.
Not that I would change only one gear to my liking. My question is if changing 6th gear is a problem. Seems like there was a hint above that this might eb true and I do not know why..... newbie (to gearing) here.

As the response to this thread has been very positive, I am going to move forward with some options. Give me just a bit of time today and I will repost something for your consideration.
Thanks for all of the input. I think that we can work this all out to make a really special Cayman gearbox for all of you.
One of the concerns that was brought up was quality. That will not be an issue as what I have in mind for this is a very high quality gear that will be Cryogenically treated and REM micropolished. I figure if you are going to do it you might as well do it right the first time around. What does everyone else think of this.
Cryogenic processing is a stress relief and stength builder, REM Micropolishing is a friction reduction, that will give lower gearbox temps as well as two to three times the life for the gear when used in conjunction. I highly recommend both.
More in just a bit.

I am excited to see that gearing options may soon be available for the Cayman S.
The fact that cryogenically treated gears may be produced is even better.
I think a R&P to improve acceleration ( 12-13 %) and add a sixith gear to put top speed back to stock with the new R&P.
This would give more torque in gears 1-5 and could cruise in sixth gear on fwy at same speed an rpm as with stock.
Changing the 2-5 gear ratios makes total sense. I bet performance would then be as fast as the 911S (as in acceleration) which Porsche never intended the CS to have. I will be watching this thread.
It has been a busy time here, and I first want to apologize for the delay in getting back to you all.
I am going to have something for your review here later today. I will attach some charts with what I think we are going to be offering for you all, provided that there is still enough interest. Which there seems to be.
Thanks for your patience and I promise I will get the charts finished here for you today.
Warmest Regards,

I would like to get some opinions on what I think will be a good starting place for our new Cayman gearing program here at Carquip.
Please let me know what you all think. I tried to address everyone's concerns regarding acceration as well as a taller 6th gear for better fuel economy.
ring and pinion is 10:41 4.10 ratio
1st remains stock at 3.31 42.367 mph redline
2nd shortens to 2.15 or 20:43 (tooth count) 65.180 mph redline
3rd shortens to 1.6 or 20:32 87.585 mph redline
4th shortens to 1.25 or 24:30 112.109 mph redline
5th shortens to 1.0 or 26:26 140.136 mph redline
6th lengthens to 0.75 or 40:30 186.849 mph redline and 3100 RPM @ 80 MPH
Let me know what you all think about this. I would have liked to put our gearchart on this page for you all but this site does not support excel documents.
I look forward to hearing your input.

Erik, would it be possible for me to only chage 6th to 0.75? Also, the $800. would that be for parts?, set?, labor?
Thanks -Stevie
(This is a repeat of my post on Rennlist, but will probably get more traction here
Maybe you could give an overview/history of the "G50" and various Porsche trannies? I see them referenced all the time as well as gear sets for various versions and am completely baffled as to what is possible. Also, please cover Getrag and Aisin 986/987 trannies.
What gears are changeable and at what cost? I was looking at something like a shorter 2, 3, and 4. Are you related to Autohaus at all (almost same phone number)? Finally, what are the costs for rebuilding with the new gears? Do you do that as well? The Cayman S has taller 1st and 2nd on purpose--unlike the 3.2L 987 Boxster S--until it got the 3.4L, I believe. There are probably a lot of possibilities depending on usage.
Below is something I was thinking of for my 986 S 6-speed Getrag. Gray is stock gearing, and red is the 2/3/4 I would replace. I understand 1st is not really replaceable. This is a good topic since there is a good amount of knowledge of gear swapping on GT3s but not enough knowedge on 986/987 trannies for much opinion to develop.
