Just look at some of the 3.8L 997S motor installs into Caymans, they don't have modified engine covers, the plenum fits just fine.

No, I don't have anything backwards.
IIRC, the
plenum you have installed is the IPD
plenum, not the Porsche
plenum. The IPD
plenum is a different shape than the 997 3.8S
plenum -- the IPD
plenum is angled to the left, positioning the throttle body to clear the starter, whereas the 3.8
plenum puts the throttle body almost directly over the starter.
Now, since you brought it up, take a
closer look at those 3.8S-into-Cayman installations -- you'll see that they are mounted
lower than the stock Cayman motor. Scott Slauson confirms the use of lowering mounts in
this post. Regardless of why they used the lowering mounts, those mounts also create more space between the throttle body and the cover (throttle goes on motor + motor mounts lower than stock = more space above throttle).
That is why the motor swaps fit without any cover mod.
You had mentioned earlier that you already have a 3.8S
plenum. Please try a quick test-fit installation. Just pull your IPD
plenum, swap the throttle body over to the 3.8S
plenum and try dropping it into place -- you'll see just how tight it is in there, and why I'm still wrestling with this.
