Foreign Registration

Has anyone heard of a law in California called a foreign registration law? Took the Cayman to Santa Maria,Ca to pick up my grandson---he wanted to do a little road trip. Spent most of the time at VAFB on a deserted beach, then to Pismo for dinner. We left Ca the next morning after spending 36 hours in the State . Low and behold, a letter from the CHP arrives 10 days later stating I'm in violation of registration laws and early investigation reveals I'm a Ca resident and trying to advoid paying a tax and/or polution laws. Now, I know this did not orginate from VAFB, this is federal. The threat, criminal charges within 20 days. About 6 hours on the phone and $40 later talked with a very nice CHP officer who assured me that all charges would be dropped. Well, you can bet your sweet ***. Found out report was filed by a private citizen and five days after I reported leaving the State. NEW Mexico tags, foreign registration program? Wow WOW is this a common practice or someone's idea of joke? Cheers to all

Ann, We New Mexicans are used to being treated as non-US citizens but this is very strange. We need to find that "citizen" that reported you and invite him/her to NM for some education about the 47th state. Their time could be better spent reporting illegal parking in handicapped spaces or something useful. We do have a very large car sales tax advantage so perhaps some people try to get away with not paying CA taxes but it is still strange that this action would be taken on a "citizen"s report.

I had a CEO job in CA for a few years and still get stupid letters from them wanting me to pay taxes on income earned elsewhere even when I don't live there.

Don't know. Felt fortunate he took my word. Told him I was a retired LtCol and HAFB, NM had copy of all papers. He checked his computer and about two minutes later said no problem. Let him know next time car is in the State? Will check with the local NM State police to make sure report has been removed. Yep! One of our fifty is missing! Thanks.

Well end of report. Took the letter to the

End of saga. Took the repor tto the LCSO and they recommended that I request a letter from the CHP stating all charges have been droped and request a copy of the report. This is to include who made the charges. This information can be sent to the LCSO. This is to prevent my being jailed in some remote town in CA and my car impounded. Any CA lawyers out there?

Are you sure that it didn't originate from VAFB? I spent 30+ years in the Army and depending on where I was stationed I might have to get the appropriate state tag. I spent two years at Fort Stewart. It was not my permanent duty station. I was there TDY (Temporary Duty). The state of Georgia (and USAA) gave me a bunch a lot of trouble because I kept my North Carolina tags (and insurance). Maybe an MP (not sure what you call them in the Air Force) saw you car on post for several days, thought you should have California plates and decided to make a report. Or maybe not.

I'm positive it did not come from VAFB. I was only on base for about 4 hours one day. Would not have happened there. Thanks for the reply and your years of service. Cheers!
