Oil change interval visible effects

From my favorite BMW forum. Randy Forbes, the OP, has got to be one of the most talented and knowledgable "car guys" out there. Period. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's a Bimmer and not a Porsche, but to some extent engines are engines and synthetic oil is synthetic oil. I thought this was worth a read.

Search for blackstone here. I've posted mine up as well as others. My first change was at 5000 miles and the second was at about 12000. Seems to be about right, in fact, blackstone recommended going a little shorter than 7k.

No track, no auto-x yet, some highway, some city.

I've done several Blackstone analyses on several different cars. I'm not sure whether it's the bias of Blackstone but all have recommended oil changes at the 5500-6000 mile intervals. The longest was on my '03 Z06, the shortest (surprisingly!) on my '06 MB C350. I was surprised because MB recommends a 13K mile interval. With one exception, all of the tests were done on cars running Mobil-1 (0W40 or 5W30). The one exception was Redline 5W30, which tested no better, and H2O content was higher (polyol ester oils are hygroscopic) so I've left Redline behind.

Here is what cracks me up,

Go to post #7 where he states "Bottom end was near spotless at 39k when I replaced the rod bearings last fall"

In case you don't know, the BMW S54 straight-six engine in the previous generation M3 and the current Z4Ms did have problems with inadequate clearances in the bottom end bearings, causing instances of spun bearings. This is why BMW went to 10W-60 motor oil. So the post may sound funny, but bearing replacement is the BMW equivalent of the 996 RMS nightmare.

I have use Blackstone for about 5 years now and I disagree that they have a basis for 5500-6000k intervals. In my 996 I use to change the oil every 7500 miles and every report said I could (and seemed to imply I should) go longer if I wanted. I will have to see if I can find a couple of the reports and and post them.

Things have changed with CS. I have changed it at 5500 and 10000. The first Blackstone said the engine was breaking in but I should not run the oil so long. At 10k they said the break in was almost complete and said the oil usage was appropriate. I am anxious to see if the CS reports start to mimic the 996 (and by my 993 before). FYI in all cars I have used M1 0w40.

Did you say that an oil report shows that the engine is still breaking in @ 10k miles? If so I believe it.

Yes the wear levels dropped from the first change but are still higher than a normal broken in engine. I expect to see very low wear levels when I change the oil at 15k. Same trend happened the 996. I had 78k on my 996 when I traded it and the wear levels were low and stable.

Service Interval Notification Reset

I have been receiving a notification to bring the Cayman in for service in 30 days. It appears the dealer did not reset the reminder. Anyone know how to do the reset and what the duration is before the next notification is ?

thanks
Vegas Lou
