Article in the Saturday May 24/May 25 issue of the "Financial Times" details some of the considerations for lowering carbon emissions from new cars AND contains some gems on the time line for implementing such.
"The average new car sold in the European Union in 2020 will have to use less fuel than almost all conventinal models on the road today,"
There are two plans with different standards. The European Commission's original standard proposes a reduction to 120g/km for new cars by 2012 but now the European Parliament wants to push for 95g of carbon per km travelled by 2020.
"ACEA [Whatever that is? There is no referent in this article.] is pushing for the first 120g/km target to be phased in until 2015 to allow new designs to come to market. It takes at least five years to develop a new model."
Heck, we don't even have the technology upon which to make a "new model!"
Here's the skinny on emissions:
Average emissions for 2006 was 160g/km. Down from (my reading from the graph published) 185g in 1995. Five years later, in 2000 it appears emissions were at 170g. Current 2008 emissions are 150g. the target is 130g for 2012.
Current Models: For some reason they include displacements!
"While there are already some models on the market that meet this target -- the Smart made by a subsidiary of Daimler, for instance, emits 88g/km -- these remain niche products."
Might I suggest that Porsche, if it EVER wants to develop an uber version of the Cayman, might want to get on the ball. It is time to roll out the vast variants in the Cayman that currently exists (present tense) in the 911 series (15 current offerings as I count them) because there may only be five (5) years left in which to maximize the Cayman line up before we are forced to drive "green."
Where is Mega when you need him?
Might this time line for emissions "force Porsche's hand" or might it mean that the 3.4L will be the behemouth of the future? I can just see an advertisement (in the best interest of the public, mind you!) in which women are encouraged not to date men driving such machines: In the add the young woman declines to get into his car because the young suitor is not driving an environmentally conscious low displacement car! The message to young men will be how studly it is to drive green.
PS Could someone help me get a poll up?
How many believe "Global Warming" is caused by man or that it is man made is a hoax?
We've a lot of cerebral folks in the Cayman Club and I'd like to get their input. Thanks!

Oh yes, "Global Warming" is definitely man-made, that's for sure.
What remains to be seen is whether it is the term "global warming" or the physical phenomenon of climate changes, that is man-made.
(Slightly OT, but it was soo tempting to comment..)
The Global warming phenomenon that we are facing is clearly man made.
All the scientific research points to us.
Sure the earth is supposed to be getting slightly warner at this point in time, but never in history has it gotten so warm so fast or had so much CO2 in the atmosphere.
Personally I think getting ourselves into shape to cut down emissions is not such a bad thing at all. The best advances in technology normally comes in times of crisis - so lets call this what it really is already!
BMW's hydrogen car looks fantastic (not the big hunky 7 series - the race car).
Tesla is a great car. Not to mention THIS.
There are also cars being developed to run on compressed air! I think its really an exciting thing. Getting away from Petroleum can only be a good IMO.
All the scientific data? What data? I know that the data published in 1924 indicate that we are well within normal temperature cycling and there have been many periods of temperature far warmer than what we see today.
The current trend appears to be man made in the sense of public relations. Some may call it Brain Washing. However, who is to declare what the optimal temperature of the earth should be?
Lastly, the over concern and outright Obsession with carbon dioxide is rubbish when the nitrogen levels of our oceans are ignored!
I don't want to hear, read rhetoric. I want those who have an understanding of science to chime in. So many scientists are beng destroyed because they won't kowtow to the piper's ruinously deluded tune.
I want to know how to construct a poll to see what the numbers from the Cayman Club indicate.

See this month's Panorama, p. 58. It looks to me this is all being addressed.
Is there a link to this?
Thanks.

This whole topic is hotly debated even among scientists. The word is not in. I believe this topic is outside the scope of this forum (and may fit into the category of political topics). I would hope the administrators agree.

This topic directly effects Porsche and Cayman. Sure I admit it is political but the fact is the Cayman is targetted with a host of other cars to be taxed out of existence.
Certainly it is possible that new technology may even result in a better Cayman. But I remember what happened when the first smog laws and devices came into play. While I certainly appreciate that we put less lead in the air and into our bodies and I certainly do not want to go back to 1974, it has taken decades to bring back horse power and it appears there is a narrowing window of opportunity to see the Cayman line developed.
That is something I think all want except Porsche AG. For some reason Porshe AG appears highly motivated to pay teams to keep the Cayman out of racing off the track.
