Funny but on the newscast tonight they said people might want to sleep in their basements because bad storms are moving in between 1am and 3am tonight with tornado warnings, high winds, hail, etc. There are already tornadoes on the ground in two places in the state, both not really close to hear but supposedly the storm is moving this way... and here I was going to cut the grass or something and now I have to get the storm cellar ready again... oh auntie M!

I'm a Broadcast Meteorologist by trade and I can tell you that it has been a horriffic year for tornadoes in the U.S. The most deaths, killer tornadoes and total tornadoes since 1998 and we're only about halfway through the season. The system that hits K.C. tonight will be here in St. Louis tomorrow. It will be a long night.
Yep, the storm line just blew thru Wichita headed east - nasty thunderstorm, but fortunately little or no hail, and no twisters nearby (*knocking on wood*).
From the radar images the severe area of storm is only several miles wide, but extends in a long band from northen Oklahoma to the KS-Nebraska border.

At ESCORT, we're continually improving our line of radar and laser detectors with the best technology. Our latest invention, the GPS-powered PASSPORT 9500ix, is no exception. It provides the best long-range protection against every known radar and laser gun in use in North America, but also incorporates GPS accuracy to silence each and every false alert. It is by far the most intelligent, fully automatic radar and laser detector ever designed. You drive. It learns. End of story. http://www.escortradar.com

Are we still at record precipitation levels? This wet year is ruining my golf game!

Here's to a safe season for you in the Midwest especially. Our tornado season doesn't start until latter, of course, but luckily it doesn't last as long.
btw - the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season was a few days ago. The average date for the first named storm is usually not until July 10....
Yeah 'tis that season again for sure. Funny part is that even though we're something like #5 in the country for tornados basements are rather uncommon in these parts. Ok, so they try and become indoor pools. Still seems preferable. Somehow the interior hallway just doesn't have the same sense of solidity.
wife had me set up the air mattress in the basement level and is getting the kids down to sleep down there. The lightning show is pretty impressive thus far but the storm hasn't hit yet, the radar maps look a little nasty... better check the grill covers...

I moved from Omaha, NE 13 years ago. While I don't miss the tornadoes and shoveling snow, I do miss the occasional thunder & lightning storm. It was particularly exciting living next door to a ham radio operator with multiple tower antennas in the backyard.
There's nothing like a basement for that feeling of security from the storm. Hope you all had a good night's rest.
It was a pretty wimpy storm in my opinion, I think they made a big deal about it because when it was over central Kansas it was a big storm, but by the time it made it to the eastern border it was weakening quite a bit with only a few localized strong areas. No damage here or anywhere close to me that I saw on tv.
