Picture this: my extended family is doing a 'lowering the flag' ceremony at the local Masonic lodge on July 4th, and when we are done, we find out that one of the two gentleman watching us was a guard at the Tomb of the Unkown Soldier. For 14 months, in the early 70's.

What an honor to meet him at that moment. Made my year, just about.

Great post. Thanks. I had the opportunity of meeting some of the Navajo Code Talkers. Felt very humble. Again, thanks for the reminder.

One of the men my father worked with was on 25 plus missions in a B-17 over Europe. Another went ashore D-Day plus 1. Neither would say anything more than that. I worked with a company whose owner had an Auschwitz tatoo, he was the only one in his family to survive.

We worry a lot about how bad things are now. And forget how horrible things were then.
