Need Advice; what would you do about this transaction?
So, I list some stuff for sale on another car forum site which I have been a long time member. Contents included 10 extended lugs among other things. I am out of town when someone paypal's me, so I call my brother who is at home and he says he will wrap and send the box. One month later, I get a call from the guy saying he got the box, but 7 lugs are missing. I call my brother, who swears he individually wrapped each lug (remembered counting 10 and being confused cause he thought he should be sending 20, but then realized he shouldn't). He said he knows all the stuff went out correctly. Well, I call the guy back and let him know what my brother told me. I tell him to check for damage. He says no damage and wants to ship it back for a full refund. I have a bit of a problem with this, however, I dont want someone trying to smear me on the internet. I am an honest guy, and I dont wanna screw anyone at all. I just want what is fair for each of us...
Please, give me advice. Thanks.

Saly, people like this have always existed. Back before eBay, I sold a lens on a phtography board. Worked perfectly when I sent it off. Buyer complained, threatened to call my employer, etc. He sent the lens back. It was now missing the rear element and was essentially useless. My guess - he needed a rear element and saw this as a way to get one free.
Now I NEVER sell on-line. Ever. Nor do I buy from eBay or any other similar on-line service. I will buy, but only from reputable establishments - typically brick and mortar guys with an on-line presence.
That's the only advice I can give. Never, ever sell on-line to someone unknown, and never, ever buy on-line from a private seller. I will buy or sell to a private individual, but only face to face where we can both inspect the merchandise and agree on the functionality, performance and condition before the money and merchandise change hands.
Yeah, it is odd. I am going to look for a receipt and check the weight, but this was a month ago! I might just do a partial refund and call it a day...about 100 bucks total was involved, but its the principle.

You know....I think you just answered your own question. Your carrier keeps track of packages well beyond a month. Go check with them, and they can pull up the label and the package weight. THAT is the ticket. Take ONE wheel bolt with you to the carrier and after they give you the weight, have them weigh just one wheel bolt.
Then do the math. If the original package weight was ten times (at least) than the one wheel bolt, there is your answer. Have the carrier print this information, then forward it to your buyer. Keep a PDF copy on file and if he reacts negatively (especially on the forum where the transaction occurred), you can post the label and weight to protect your own integrity.
That is EXACTLY what I would do. I am crossing my fingers you find the proper info with your carrier!
I would say that because you are dealing with second hand information and because you were not 100% in control or aware of what happened you should probably just get the guy to send back the lug nuts and issue him a refund. If I had packed and shipped them myself it would be a different story but hey, that just my $.02.
I had a similar situation where I sold the soft top from my elise. I sent it out received funds and weeks later got an email saying it was damaged and he wanted a refund. He sent me picks showing damage but it was clear it was the top that came with his car and not the top I shipped. He contacted paypal and they reversed the charge. I filed a complaint with paypal and they said there was nothing they could do as his cc issued a charge back. It's been over a year and I'm still pissed off about it. I won't sell anything online anymore either. Not worth the hassle.

Good luck.
Think this is the best answer, followed by the part that says: "Never trade anything online"!!

A good car will get you from point A to point B. A great car... will just get you into trouble!
Check the weight!! This should prove you correct. However, dealing with a dishonest bum who waits 30 days to complain probably means he will find some excuse to put the blame on you. I'm in retail and when I know I'm right and the customer is dead wrong sometimes I give em what ever it takes to go away. Once I gave a customer a refund and fired them. Not literally set on fire ,I just told them I have no interest in dealing with you in the future. They were shocked!
