So what do folks think about the Infiniti G37 Convertible that's due to debut on Nov 19th? All they are saying is 320+ hp, 3.7L V6. Automatic 3-piece folding top, I'm curious what the Boxster folks think.
Oh, something else about a 7th gear too!!! Infiniti G Convertible for 2009 - Infiniti USA
Five roadsters in my lifetime and a 2006 G35 - the car I dumped to buy a 2007 Boxster. Beautiful exterior, nice interior. Worse clutch setup I ever drove. Binary - and all clutch action within the first half inch of pedal travel. Forty years of driving standards and stalled that beast at least once every time I drove it. The clutch is supposedly better in the G37, but from what I read not yet to the standard of a Honda S2000 (best I ever drove) or the 987. IMO bad gas mileage - 23 max, but my 2001 Corvette gave me 28/29 on the highway. The 987 gives me 25/28 and is more fun to drive. IMO not very good handling. Front tires had a disconcerting tendency to "tuck under" in decreasing radius turns. Apparently I'm not grown up enough for a coupe, convertible or not. Never see another G35/G37 in my driveway.
But the price makes it very attractive. Especially if your wife is going to be the prime driver. Most don't care about handling or gas mileage. I know I made a large generalization there but you get what I mean, all women on this forum excluded of course!!!
I like the G37 coupe, although it just looks bigger and bigger each time a see one. I see both men and women driving them around here and note the following generalizations:
Guy drivers: Think they are really hot in the G, but for some reason always find somewhere to turn off as soon as they see my CS in their rear-view mirrors. They just "know" they have 330HP, but aren't quite ready for the outcome of a contest with a real sports car,.....for now, they will just look cool.
Women drivers: Don't care, as long as it drives "nice" and they believe they look "sporty" that's enough for most.
The drop-top does look nice, but looks strickly a "chick" car IMO.....OK, I said it,.....but it's true. No problem with that at all, I just won't be driving one.
One thing, they keep upping the HP in these cars and they never seem to get much faster,.....at least not anywhere near what the HP numbers suggest. Weight?
Current owner of a 2007 G35 Sport 6-speed and I'll chime in with me thoughts.
-the G is a heavy car and feels like it, no matter the HP rated.
-the clutch is a pain like JackTs2K says and I've even had the recall service done on it.
-don't laugh, but I've driven it at Watkins Glen for 2-days and the engine will pull a lot of cars in during the straights!
-lot's of neat built-in tech like bluetooth, keyless entry, iPod support etc.
-great value for the money
So right now I consider myself very fortunate to have both. A normal sedan that doesn't get much attention for Saturday chores and grocery getting.
And a Cayman S for the Sunday mornings.

I like the idea of a convertible hardtop, but I won't own a car with an automatic trans. To me, it ruins the whole sports car experience.
Completely agree. I don't think the Boxster is in the same category as this car anyway. The G convertible is a heavier 2+2. I'm assuming it competes more squarely with the BMW 335, Audi A4 Cabrio, etc. and maybe is intended to be a poor man's Lexus SC.
