There are two major plants that you can visit. Stuttgart and Leipzig. In Stuttgart they make the 911s. In Leipzig they make the Cayennes.

Stuttgart is in Southern Germany. That is their original plant and tours are available (the town is actually Zuffenhausen, in the metro area of Stuttgart). They also have a museum there, and are in the process of building a new one.

Leipzig is in the Eastern Central part of the country. They have cool test track there, and for a price, you can drive on it or ride shotgun in almost any Porsche.

Check out the Porsche web site for more info on both.

Go a beautiful few hours south by rail to Lucerne Switzerland and check out the Swiss transportation museum (or something like that) which has a large collection of cars, train, boat technology etc. Neat.

If only 1 place, Zuffenhausen is best. In the meantime you can also go to Mercedes factory at Bad Cant Start.

kaywman, if you really still think "life sucks and then you die", you need to change something in your life in a big way! There are lots of people right here on CC whose lives don't suck, even if they get conspicuously grumpy from time to time .

As I recall someone else here has commented on your grim signature, to no apparent effect.

Anyway, in the spirit of kaywman's signature, things to see in Deutschland: Dachau and Bergen-Belsen.

The new Mercedes Benz Museum opened in May 06 in Stuttgart. A "must visit" for all motor heads. I think the new Porsche Museum opens later this year. This should be worth waiting for as the current one only has about 20 cars on display.

What to see depends somewhat on where you intend to go and if you are driving or using public transport, but here are some suggestions from personnel experience.

Of course the Porsche factory tour and Porsche museum are a must see.

Also, the Audi folks were road testing Lamborghini’s on the Autobahn A6, northeast of Stuttgart. I really enjoyed the Deutsches museum in Munich. This is a very large museum with tons of unique exhibits, it was outstanding.
Deutsches Museum: Deutsches Museum

Touring southern Germany along the Alpenstrasse is great fun and you can also venture into Switzerland and Austria if the urge strikes. Driving along the Rhine is nice. There are lots of castles along the Rhine and in southern Germany. I'm saving the Black Forrest for my next trip.

If you are going north, Berlin is a great city to visit. Lots of history and a contrasting mix of old and new architecture. Leipzig is nearby but I never made it there.

I recommend a good reference book like "Frommers Germany" (no affiliation) and a good detailed road map or GPS.

Enjoy your trip.

Dude, it's just an expression. An attempt at humor. For some it is painfully true. Amazing how easy it is to offend some people.

Iffn it were me, I'd spend some time at a beer garden in Munich. See a few of Ludwig's castles. Drive the autobahn. Enjoy the culture. It's a little different.

Especially the older toilets over there that are equipped with "inspection plates"!
