Interesting read: BMW 135i vs Porsche 911

Title says it all. All though i do beleive there is a huge "understood you" of the head to head... is that fun is fun and obviously the aura of owning and driving a Porsche is still intact.

Repost from 1addicts.com

Used Altavista to do a rough German to English conversion:

Comparison BMW 135i against Porsche 911 — AUTO FIG. 48/2007 — 07.12.2007

Half price, same fun?

306 HP for 38.950 euro: BMW becomes ever more impudent. The 135i aims with its road performances at the Porsche 911. Only theoretically or also in the direct comparison?

Of January horn mark completely theoretically: a compact car with more than 300 HP, turbo-six cylinder and rear-wheel drive. That promises nevertheless best Sportwagenfeeling, supertimes on the round distance, peak values for the table reserved for regulars. Sounds completely concrete after washgenuine competition for the sports car icon Porsche 911. Further: The 135i of BMW is such a Porsche hunter. The new compact Coupé with 306 HP could hunt strong 911 Carrera properly for 325 HP before itself. And instead of refreshment in the goal a bitter pill supply later: The BMW does not cost half as much with 38.950 euro yet times as the smallest 911er. Now times practically: We let the 135i begin against 911 Carrera. On the racing course, in the highway Kurvengeschlaengel, on the motorway. On the motorway the 1er must let the 911er pull
On the motorway the Porsche creates loosely 30 km/h more than the BMWS. We start with the motorway. This operational area is appropriate for the Porsche naturally better. The flat flounder creates even in the tested version with mechanism (Tiptronic S, 2945 euro surcharge) speed 280 - and feels not even spectacularly. In addition, the 911 drives all surface irregularities millimeter-exactly after, remains at the bitumen sticking reassuring down firmly. BMW limits its for boliden in principle electronically. In the case of the seriously forward-storming 135i the virtual brake tightens the Spritzufuhr soon and to table reserved for regulars Prahlern thereby the truempfe from the hand: More than speed 250 is not also during position of the gas pedal floor plate in it. Well so, one could do mine - with hissing wind eddies the frameless side windows of the Coupés announce its version starting from 240 km/h that they have difficulties with this speed anyway, to protect. In addition a jerky straight line discharge ensures with maximum speed for nervousness with the driver. That is everything but sovereign. The turbo engine of the BMWS plays trumps with the passage
Overhaul with ease: The turbo engine pushes the 1er also in the highest course powerfully. Which the 1er can do really, other disciplines show. That keeps in track for example. Clearly, if scarcely 1600 kilograms unloaded weight meet per over 300 HP, an invisible rubber band helps with accelerating. 5.3 seconds are also under sports car one more than tidy announcement, in the compact class are simply only sensational the value. But Porsche can despite automatic transmissions just as well. With more weights on the rear axle the drive wheels bite themselves more strongly with the road surfacing - in such a way remains altogether even easier 911 for the 1er-BMW in keeps in track on speed 100 with likewise 5.3 seconds on the heels. Differently with the passage. Here the BMW plays the advantages of the Turbos out. The force of 400 Newtonmeters torque comes from the deepest cellar. The BMW checks off overhauling procedures in the last courses as casual. But turbomachines have also disadvantages. Indeed little sound, leaving steam above around and - even with the intelligently loaded double turbo 135i - klitzekleine reaction weakness. One feels in the middle numbers of revolutions. Only the natural capacity strength from a three-litre Auger works, briefly thereafter slams shut the turbo again violently. In addition, that precedes powerfully, works somehow in two stages, like synthetic Mumm.

The Porsche porsche-Boxer makes with more race. Spontaneous acceleration in the third drive position with 4000 routes? The 3,6-Liter winds up delay-free, schubst the car with a jerk forward. In addition the six cylinder continues to turn off greedily, roars, hammers, works - many more authentically than the doped machine of the 1ers. Exactly the same the brakes: In the BMW the right foot presses only into the soft pedal zone, which marks a pronounced servo support out. Porsche drivers tap there approximately on a hard pressure point perceptible in the tips of the toe, feel the rigid mechanics under the sole. Both cars commonly is however the impressing result of the leg work: Braking distances around the 36 meters nearly already mark - the expected - optima. We expected more from the handling of the BMW. The 135i is involved undisturbed from load change reactions neutrally by the curves, gives in jaggedly and keeps safe owing to the careful DSC tuning an enormously high speed level. On wavy surface however the front tires run after felt rather the unevenness of the roadway than the defaults of the driver. To the driving machine Porsche is not enough to the BMW ran

Victory for Porsche: The BMW cannot drive to the driving machine 911er to the sheet metal.
Altogether it becomes fast noticeable that this mechanical Kitzel is missing to the BMW, which constitutes the principle Porsche. Indeed the unbeugsame guidance of the 911er-Fahrwerks. The steering element becoming more directly with increasing impact, which becomes inaccurate never. And it is this uniquely stramme suspension Porsche, which lifts itself against roll and pitch inclinations of the body. A Porsche loves curves, the BMW masters it. That is the difference! A Porsche is to be brought with hardly a drivingdynamic examination from the peace, it is the driving machine absolutely. However the Tiptronic does not fit the puristic character of the icon from Zuffenhausen. It nevertheless switches enormously briskly, converts gas instructions allegedly without transducer slip. Similarly sportily: the taut, well outlined seats, which take the driver firmly into the pliers, while those remind armchair in the BMW of a classical GT. It registers however only who on the racing course demands full achievement. Here, on that 1.3 kilometers long test course, the Porsche prescht two seconds before the 1er by the goal. Two seconds of difference mean another league. Another world - the Porsche world. Result of AUTO picture editor January horn

Half money - still comes. Same fun? Here the thesis of the BMW 135i does not come up. Because the expensive Porsche 911 is like had too all only sports cars with body and soul. More exactly said: It supplies the suitable offer from impressing achievement, promotes the desire at the technology, the passion when driving. The BMW is a mad car and also still many more favorable. That does not hand everything nevertheless to drive to the Porsche to the sheet metal.
