Speculation About a New Entry-Level Porsche Out on the Market in Just Four Years
This development, if true, would contradict prior statements by Porsche chief Wiedeking, but then public statements are only valid during the narrow time frame in which they are made and are obviously subject to revision, based on changed or evolving circumstances.
It's not clear whether the following piece is merely a trial balloon, but the fact is that four years is the general time frame from conception to the start of production of a new model.
Somehow this looks a bit like a car with front wheel drive. Clearly, a vehicle like this would tend to dilute the Porsche "brand image" that is still being cultivated so obsessively. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing an even smaller (and less expensive) Porsche than the Cayman, as long as it has mid-engine placement and two seats, perhaps a modern and lightweight re-interpretation of the 914 (without the tacky pop-up headlights, of course), but what's being displayed here looks more like what Audi ought to be building.
It's funny you should post this, I heard through a source with Porsche that indeed Porsche IS considering such a car to help their overall fleet gas mileage in the face of things like CAFE regulations, etc. He also confirmed that the Roxster, if it ends up being called that, has been green-lighted and is slated for 2011 or more likley 2012 introduction, also with a hybrid version...
I have been a life long fan of Honda. I have owned many of their splendid sports cars and motorcycles. The NSX is a fantastic car, the VFR 750 is a great bike, and they are an engineering driven company with lots of credibility. Yet they make mopeds, lawnmowers, trucks, aeroplanes, outboard motors, and a bewildering variety of products. Does this detract from the NSX or the VFR? No!
The one thing is though that Honda don't make trash ... all their products are the best in class, and as long as Porsche keep the same principle, I just don't see the problem.

Logically, you're absolutely right. But emotionally, Porsche is what it is for the sports car image, much like ferrari and lambo. If they decide to go all hatch and hybrid, then they are throwing that image out of the window, I really hope that doesnt happen.
Can you imagine a hybrid ferrari?? or a lambo hatch??

Yes, I can actually, and I'll bet they can too, as without that sort of diversification, these are precisely the sort of brands that face extinction if they don't change.
Within our lifetimes the automotive industry will change out of all recognition, and any manufacturer who hasn't realised that and isn't now working towards it is a museum piece in the making.
I'd rather have Porsche alive and kicking, even if that means they make food mixers, than see them as another plaque on a museum wall.

Well I cant imagine that yet, but maybe it'll be true.
Anyway, I agree, I too would rather have Porsche alive, even if that means them producing hatches (or food mixers )
P.S. There are actually Porsche Design kitchen machines made by siemens!
