SF Bay Area Drives

A couple of good drives in the SF Bay Area -

- hwy 84 from Woodside over Skyline to hwy 1
- Calaveras Blvd from Milpitas past the reservoir to Niles Canyon Road
- hwy 9 from Saratoga to Santa Cruz
- Tesla Road from Livermore towards Tracy

I'd say Skyline from hwy 92 south but there are way too many militant bicyclists on the road to make it a fun drive.

Oh - and let's not forget hwy 1, either from Morro Bay north to Carmel, or Bodega Bay north to Fort Bragg. Both segments are fun, scenic and not for those with severe acrophobia.

I just went down Page Mill off Skyline for the first time in years the other day and noticed they repaved it, which moves it up into my top 10 drives.

So let's see - hwy 9 Saratoga to Santa Cruz, hwy 1 north to 84, 84 east to Skyline to Page Mill and down the hill. Sounds like a great drive!

Roads

Redwood Road is definitely excellent.

Tesla to Mines Rd to Del Puerto Canyon...but leave early in the morning. Or stay on Mines, and it becomes San Antonio road and turns west toward Mt. Hamliton. Up, over and down 130 into San Jose.

Or in the North: its been many many years, this is great:
101 North to Canyon Road in Geyersville, to Dry Creek Road, which becomes Stewart's Point road, take that to the Hwy 1 on the Coast. Then south on 1 to Fort Ross road and back inland. The either loop on King Ridge or go south in the hills....

How about a Drive this weekend?

If we're on the topic, how about a drive early Sunday morning?

Did the hwy 9 -> hwy 1 -> hwy 84 loop yesterday starting around noon. Went down 84 instead of down Page Mill because my wife wanted to stop bu Bick's for lunch. Oh well. hwy 9 and 1 were nice except for the Boulder Creek Arts and Wine festival - had to detour off 9 on to a side street to get around it. And there was a tad too much traffic on 84 from La Honda on up to the top then down to Woodside. I need to try it again some time when the flower children, bikers and soccer moms are not out in force. Any suggestions for a better time/day for this ride?

pointnshoot,

I drove the 101 > 84 > 9 > Los Gatos loop last week to avoid the truck accident that closed 101 south in Mountain View. Surprisingly, the traffic was extremely light at 6pm heading up 84 and all the way down 9 into Saratoga. I highly recommend ending the work day with some Cayman therapy.

True - but they're more fun!

OTOH, have you taken hwy 1 from Stinson Beach north to Fort Bragg? Great views AND lots of fun! This is on my list for after I get through the break-in period. I'm a bit acrophobic, so the southbound (cliff-side) direction is a lot more challenging for me and I would guess, a lot slower! So I'd go hwy1 north to Fort Bragg, then out to 101 to head back south.

Great drive - unfortunately I work in Santa Clara and live in Fremont. Maybe 237 to Calaveras Blvd. up and around past the reservoir to Sunol then 680 south? I think I'll be home a bit late on Friday.....ooops, no - can't! My daughter gets in from LA 645 pm Friday and I have to go pick her up at SJC. Oh, well - I'll just have to wait 'til next week!

Can someone be more specific about where Redwood Road is? Quick search on the maps couldn't locate it.

Thanks in advance,

pf
