Looking at the posts, speed might not have been the main factor. But yeah, the Dragon is with a lot of risks, even if you know what you are doing.

Apparently this wasn't actually on the Dragon, but on Rt. 28 on the way there. Hindsight is 20-20, but why would you head out there at night with the temp in the 30's?

It read like he wanted to go for a drive but one event in the weekend is the Midnight Run. Some MINI owners like to run lots of auxiliary lamps (they think they are true Rally Cars). Here is a link to someone who got a ticket coming back from the Midnight Run for having to many auxiliary lamps MINI COOPER :: North American Motoring - The Police
I love Minis. Something cool about them. They are a car that passionate car people drive.
I found much of the "coolness" in that they are just so darned cute I never saw a MINI that wasn't cute. However, when I sold ours, I wasn't sad to see it go. Just had too many problems with it. But they are cute
I love Minis. The Dragon sucks. It was a lot of fun ten or fifteen years ago . . . especially on a motorcycle . . . but now it's an accident waiting to happen.
There are much better places to drive/ride than Deal's Gap. Maybe spindoc will tell you where they are but I'm not talking.

I had heard that they had reliability problems. How bad were the problems that you had? I had thought about getting one as a highway commuter vehicle.....but now, maybe not!! (b/c I have my Cayman)
We still have our '02 Mini Cooper S and it's been a great car. It was my track car for the first 3 years of its life (and by the way, it lead the first "Mini's at the Dragon" event in October '02). In '05 we took the roll bar and race seat out, and now it's my alternative daily driver. Our three oldest kids learned to drive a stick shift in that car, and two of them learned how to autocross and drive on track with it. An outstanding multi-purpose car that's still great fun to drive, with very few issues at all in 6 years of ownership.
