Los Angeles: PCH & Malibu Driver's Run

PCH & Malibu Driver’s Run

1. Meet at the Malibu Colony Plaza located at 23841 West Malibu Road, at the southwest corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Webb Way, approximately 12 miles north / west from where I-10 turns into PCH.

2. Turn north on PCH for 0.7 miles

3. Right on Malibu Canyon Road / Las Virgenes Cyn Rd (at top of hill) for 6.3 miles

4. Left on Mulholland Highway for 12 miles

5. Right on Decker Road / Westlake Blvd (at the 'T') for 3.4 miles

6. Left on Potrero Road for 7.3 miles

7. Right on Reino Road (at 'T') for 0.1 miles

8. Left on Lynn Road (becomes West Potrero Cyn Road) for 6.6 miles

9. Left on Hueneme Road / Lewis Road (at 'T') for 1 mile

10. Left on Las Posas Road for 3 miles

11. Left on Pacific Coast Highway SOUTH (towards Santa Monica) for 25.7 miles

12. Arrive at the point of departure, the Malibu Colony Plaza

Route footnotes:
<dir><dir>

Just before Mulholland Highway on Malibu Canyon, look at the mountains above to your left. You may recognize them from the opening scene of both the movie and the TV versions of 'M.A.S.H.'.

Along Mulholland Highway look for The Rock Store, a famous hangout for motorcycles and classic cars. There is a great overlook on the left near the top of the Rock Store Hill on Mulholland Highway with room to park many cars.

The descents down Westlake Blvd and West Potrero are very steep and twisty (and fun!) so take care.
</dir></dir>

Neptune's Net is another popular spot for bikes and cars along PCH at the corner of Yerba Buena Road. They serve sea food.

For the cyclists amonst you...Potrero through Hidden Valley is one of my all-time favorite rides.

When I drive my Cayman S down there, I am definitely going to take it on Malibu Canyon, Decker, Kanan, Potrero, etc.

(I grew up in Westlake Village and call the Bay Area home now)

Three quick additions:

1. I have driven this route in a Boxster, a Cayman and a hardtop 997 Carrera. The Cayman was hands down the best handling (because of its ability to transition with poise between left-right-left turns) and the most overall fun, shortly in front of the Boxster (which got bonus points for top down motoring on a cold but clear winter day). My only recommendation is: start early and you will be rewarded with light traffic.

2. The last time at the Rock Store, ran into Jay Leno who was goofing around on a bike. Its a pretty mellow scence. Out of 100 bikes on a Saturday morning parked there, I would venture that half are being driven by doctors, lawyers and senior management types.

3. Item 10 on the Itinerary is a 3-mile long arrow-straight two-lane road through row crops with no side exits or entries and a commanding view, making effective LE patrols an impossibility. Short of using an abandonned Air Froce runway, I could not think of a better place to floor your car and hold it there until you run out of courage.
