Is there any place that is good in Bay Area?

For the Cayman? What a question!! I live in the South Bay and would recommend any of these, for a start:

- Route 9 from Saratoga up over the mountains to Santa Cruz
- Route 1 from San Fran to Santa Cruz
- Route 84 from the coast to I280
- Skyine (route 35) from 92 south to 17
- Calaveras Rd from Milpitas north and onto Niles Canyon Rd
- Old Santa Cruz Hwy from Lexington Resevoir to Summit to Soquel-San Jose Rd down to the coast

If you want a day trip, you probably couldn't beat south on 17 to the coast then south on 1 to Monterey, then down through Carmel along the coast road to Big Sur, lunching at Nepenthe.

Driving any of these in the Cayman will show you exactly what kind of car you have. And, if you like to push it a little, I've found cars simply get off the road and let you by when you come up behind them in the croc!!

because of my location, pleasant hill , so far the one that i'm interested in doing is the pt bonito trip. but i'm still not sure about how to get there.


another problem is, what about the police in these areas?are there a lot of police that waits for drivers or bikers and make things more difficult for us?

There are many great roads.

Local to you (I'm in Walnut Creek).

1) Clayton Blvd going south turns into Marsh Creek Road, out to Brentwood. Excellent but can be busy with traffic and bicyclists. Go early in the morning.

2) In Livermore, take Mines Road south. This is my personal favorite. You can branch east on Del Puerto Canyon out the 5, or West (San Antonio Rd?) up through the valley and the backside of Mt Lick, and down 130 into San Jose.

3) Calaveras Rd, as mentioned (just did it last weekend !). Perfect for Cayman

4) On the Peninsula, geez its unlimited: Everyone does Skyline but I prefer the smaller ones: Kings Mountain Road from Woodside, over the top of Skyline, and down La Tunitas Creek to Hwy 1. There's Gazos Creek, and Stage Road, and I could go on and on.

Get yourself the Northern California 'Gazetter' (I think its better than Thomas).

Today I did Redwood Road from Castro Valley north to Moraga. This is a great Cayman road, lots of 2-3-4 combinations.



In the afternoon, did Happy Valley Road, to Bear Creek Road. Happy Valley is very gravely, so take it slow, but there's lots of twists and dips on Bear Creek . Also try San Pablo Dam Road, very fast but again trafficy, so early on a weekend is probably best.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Hwy 80 along the east shore between 7-9am on weekdays. Best Drive Ever! (Oh a sarcasm machine, that's REAL useful...)

Last Sunday Drive:

Grizzly Peak Rd to Skyline Blvd, in the Oakland Hills. Great curves, but way too busy and residential to be driven at the necessary velocities.



Redwood Rd: Still a favorite



Palomares Rd from the 580 south to Niles Canyon Rd. Definitely a top quality drive, though a bit rough in spots. Some residential areas, but plenty of opportunity for serious speed.



More next weekend...

Black Rd. is another decent option between 17 and Skyline Ave. I prefer Route 9 to get up to Skyline, but it has too many bicyclists and cops on the weekends.

Talk about spoiled: I live off of Skyline so I get to drive Skyline and Route 9 to and from work four days a week. I'm a lucky bastard

route 9 at times is undriveable (is there such word?) due to the number of bycilist. and cops hide left and right... I see more CHP's lurking on HWY 9 on a saturday than I do a week on 101/280

9 is usually only risky with bikers and cops on the weekends, although there have been some occasional speed traps on Thursdays and Fridays lately. The weekday traps can be avoided if you turn off on Redwood Gulch 2/3s of the way down the mountain. You can then take Steven's Canyon out to 85 or 280. It's a much more enjoyable drive than taking 9 all of the way down anyway, especially b/c the speed limit drops to 30 near the bottom.

Next weekend, I am planning on heading down to Hollister from San Jose to check out 25 and head south from there. At the end of 25, I am planning on heading west to 1 and coming back up via rt. 1 through Big Sur, Carmel, Pebble and wrap it up coming back to San Jose via either 17 or 9.
