Great idea, or stupid idea?

GT Academy competition to put GT5 Prologue player in real race - Autoblog

Quote:
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, the distributor of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue across the pond, and Nissan are joining forces to host a competition that could place a really good gamer behind the seat of a real Nissan 350Z at a very real 24-hour endurance race in Dubai. The competition is called GT Academy, and the first round will be an online GT5 Prologue tournament hosted on the PLAYSTATION Network (for Europeans only, we presume). Based on the picture provided, it appears that entrants will be racing a Nissan GT-R in a special livery when the competition begins later this month. The rest of the competition will span some eight months, at the end of which the winner will receive a four-month training program to earn actual racing licenses. With his or her newfound knowledge of real physics and how actual damage occurs, the winner will then be given a stint behind the wheel of a Nissan 350Z in the 24-hour endurance race in Dubai.
Wait until the winner realizes that in real life, cars get damaged when they bump the wall or each other...

Are you sure? In my case, I just hit the door lock button three times real fast and it seems to reset all the damage in my Cayman.

I think this will backfire, racing in a game and being on a track is totally different, which I think Nissan knows too, which is why they probably did not put a GT-R into this one.

It is a brilliant idea, and I have no doubt that the winner will do just fine out on the track.

They will be going through 4 months of training to get racing licenses that most track day folks don't have.

I've had three days of racing school so just need to send in my $400 in for the SCCA license, then I'm a bona fide racer.

Sure...

With four months of race school, he/she ought to be able to not get killed at Dubai. Not much else though. Racing is hard wired into the nervous system/brain at an early age and cannot be force fed back in later and be truly competitive.
