what do you guys think about a shout box? (like autopia.org) where your questions could be answered quickly and easily

I haven't looked at their shoutbox but if it is simply a chat window where you put something in and others online type in something after you (perhaps answering a question) the problem with those is they can't be searched and people can't refer to them later so the knowledge sharing is lost. It's better to ask a question in the forum and then get your answer(s) and go from there having something to refer back to. Shout boxes or chat windows might be fine for social discussion (what color thong are you wearing now?) ) but not for support unless someone is logging the questions and answers and transferring them to some longer term storage like a forum or knowledge base that is searchable.

I might also add that it impacts server performance.
