I was looking through the various forums (fora?) here, reading the posts as usual, when I noticed an ad for a Presidential candidate (not gonna mention names) at the bottom of the page. Unfortunately, I found this rather disturbing and inappropriate.
One of the things I really like about CaymanClub is that it (primarily) focuses on the cars and the people who own/admire them. There is a spot for non-car-related topics, and that's great. But, that's where all the non-car stuff should remain. In fact, if I remember correctly, a decision had been made a long time ago that politics were not an appropriate topic anywhere on CaymanClub.
This election's "political silly season" promises to be the ugliest and nastiest yet (and that's saying something!). I would really rather not have that nonsense intrude upon our nice, civilized car-centric site. We will all get more exposure than anyone can stand to a seemingly-endless stream of political chicanery, buffoonery and related nonsense through other sources, it would be really nice if we could avoid it here.

I think you are absolutely correct and I agree with you. Lets keep the politics out of the CaymanClub. We have enough issues to deal with

I could be wrong, but perhaps Ken has sold site access to a service that places banner ads related to page content. I've noticed other clearly non-sponsor banners for, e.g. a car leasing company at the bottom of a thread about lease terms, If so, controlling content may be difficult.
I just started noticing the Google ads. Have they been here all along? I often read this site via my iPhone and get a different view and don't notice the ads. It seems to me if we donate money to this site it should be kept Google ad free (or any non-sponsor ad free for that matter).
Beside that- how much can the "Ads by Google" be providing? $10/month? You have to get a lot of hits before you get much from Google.
I think that the ad space is through google. But, I agree, there should be a way to turn it off. In the meantime, I would suggest not reading the ads ...

Cayman S - a portable amusement park
I spend a lot of time at a Ducati forum. They too have resorted to selling advertising space. One of the newest sponsors is "BikeOrNot". BikeOrNot is a MySpace for “bikers” . . . . gnarly, skanky bikers. Their banner shows motorcycle dudes covered in tattoos. Maybe, if we play out cards right we can get them to sponsor here.
Geez it would be nice if someone asked me about this first before demanding a change.
First, the Google ads have been here for a long time. They are context sensitive or at least attempt to be. However, people can buy ad placement with Google and then their ads get shown.
Second, I guess it is the season for politics and some politicians have started buying Google ads.
Third, in order to prevent any ad from showing up on the site I need the full URL of the ad, then I have to go into my Google ad panel and specifically tell Google NOT to show that ad on this site.
Fourth, I've been a little pre-occupied with other things this past week than manually removing Google ads.
Fifth, if members provide me the full URL I will go into my Google admin tools and request that those ads be blocked.
Thanks for your support...
PS. No I did not sell the site, had I done something like that don't you think I would tell people???
