Ooops, that will teach me a lesson to not glance through stuff and immediate think of Austria instead of Australia
Also, doesn't Australia run on British schooling system?
I changed my flag to the one for my nationality
Australia has its own syllabus for elementary, secondary and tertiary educations. those are in turn controlled by their respective boards of study.

I like to lump all three into K12 and college definition, for our heavily US dominated membership. I used to call it elementary, secondary, and etc... but very few people got what it mean "finishing secondary school", so I no longer use that terminology and lump everything in to K12 and college.

Well, I am not sure what is the excuse, but US schools need to spend some extra time on geography. Maybe an attitude change of "we are the only ones that matter in the world" and requirement to learn a foreign language to graduate (like in EU) would make US K12 education as good as the higher education.
I don't remember you being in any of my classes when I was attending grades K-12 and then college and after that a 4 year apprenticeship. Please don't paint all Americans with a broad brush and assume that you know what we have studied and for that matter how many languages we can speak. It may not be a requirement to graduate however I know many individuals that can speak two or more languages.
If we thought that we were "the only ones that matter in the world" we wouldn't be spilling our blood fighting so that millions of other people around the world would be free today. Go to Normandy and look at the thousands of white crosses that mark the graves of Americans that have given their lives for others!

Take a good hard look. These are just some of the Americans in just one place that have made the ultimate sacrifice. Many others have died in hundreds of other places around the world. We know the geography!!
Twenty one from my high school died in The Republic of South Vietnam. Some were close friends, your statement hit a nerve!

9 out of 10 people I meet in US don't seem to know or care to know a second language. And unless I am talking to someone who is either into history or was very well educated and has masters degree... well they could not tell which continent half of the countries are, let alone point out where they are located on the map. So I stand by my statement. There is not enough money dedicated to K-12 here.
I am not sure where I read it last, but if memory serves me right, out of 230MM people in US only 30MM are fluent in a second language.

What does this have to do ANYTHING with discussion about education and the fact that few people know a second language in this country?

There are 330,000,000 people in the USA. How many do you know or have you met?
There are some problems with the educational system, but how much money we spend is not the problem.
What my second post has to do with is your statement: Maybe an attitude change of "we are the only ones that matter in the world"
BTW apsinkus I'm not trying to get into a "pissing match" with you over this. If we keep this up one or more of the moderators will put an end to this discussion. We are off topic. This is not the place for an in depth discussion of the US educational system. Let's stick to talking about Caymans,
something we can agree on!

I don't need to meet them, that is what staticians are for and studies you may find will confirm to you my observation.
One study I read this year stated that 50%+ of people in EU speak 2 languages and 25%+ speak 3. Even if we fudged number, there is no way we could get US to 25%,even if we included undocumented people.
No wonder we are screaming "globalization" here and some other countries are dancing with joy, because they are ready for global culture and economy.

I still stand by my statement. Further discussion of this here would drag me into politics and that is not tolerated here. So we will have to respectfully agree to disagree.
