The 'Cayman Chat' forum is clearly the forum most visited and most read. It is without doubt where most members and guests log into when paying a quick visit to see what is going on.
For this reason, any topic posted on that forum gets the most reads and responses, as opposed to the other 'specialty' forums. When a topic is moved into a 'specialty' forum it invariably becomes stagnent or dies a sudden death. In contrast, those posts that remain on the Chat forum loose their steam gradually as they migrate to page two and then more so as they move on to page three and higher.
My opinion is that as long as a post, regardless of topic, is getting active attention on the Chat forum, it serves members well to leave it in that forum. At some point, say for example once it gravitates to page three or greater of the Chat forum, it can then be moved to an appropriate 'specialty' forum which may in fact breath new life into it as it will then appear on that forum's page one . Once there, it will also be handy to find for those browsing with a specific topic in mind. I don't know what the current criteria is for moving a post out of the Chat forum, but I have noticed that it can be fairly quick, and even when it is drawing active interaction.
If there is a specific criteria for when a post is moved I may have missed a post that stated it. If there is not, maybe one could be established that would leave an active post on the Chat forum a bit longer.
Points well taken. I’m assuming your speaking of moves to the Cayman Pictures forum. I agree and will refrain in making Topicmoves to the Pictures forum, until it losses interest or steam, at which point it will be time for the move. If the author of the trend would like it moved before hand, PM your request to me. I’ll notify the author of the move via a PM. Your trend “Day trip to Fl Keys” has been moved back to the “Cayman Chat” forum.
All bets are off if K Man-S does not approve.

When someone clicks the 'Active Topics' link it shows ALL active topics for ALL forums, the act of moving it to another forum does not remove it from showing up in the Active Topics list. There are MANY topics that are active and are not in the Chat forum, some are the longest or most read in the history of the forum. So the act of moving out of the Chat forum is not a death knell if people are interested in the topic. I'm fine with a little leeway on the picture type threads as those don't stay that active for too long anyway so we can wait until they slow down a little to move them to the Pictures forum. However, other items that clearly belong in other forums, such as mod topics in the mods forum, complaints in the complaint forum should be moved there ASAP to help keep the site organized.
If anyone is unclear on how to use the 'Active Topics' link and marking messages as read please let me know and I will try to explain it further.
please...please dont change it! This is one of the most organized better and easier to read forums I have been on. The ACTIVE topics is how i keep track of what i have read and what i havent. It is true that if a topic is of little interest to most people it will die away....such is life. If you want to bring a thread back to life, then just post a quick reply in it and it might take off..
Keeping topics in the correct threads is going to be fairly important in the future for searching as well, if everyone starts posting everything in Cayman Chat this place is gonna end up getting difficult to navigate. I think most who have been here a while will agree that keeping things organized will make it a better forum. .....just my two cents.
I think Kmns has made valid points, and I have observed the same. As many others my first place to check for new posts is 'Cayman Chat' forum - I know about the icons and different colors that mark new topics in all forums, but the 'Chat' is the fast way to see what is going on. Looks to me like we get about 20 to 25 new topics on a good day - I think that is a good number that can be managed on the 'Cayman Chat' and then allowed to migrate.
euroboy, have you tried the 'Active Topics' link? That will show you all newly responded to messages and new topics since your last log on in ALL forums, not just Chat.
I think the Active Topics looks good - my bookmark for the site is to the top level forum page - the question becomes how people have bookmarked the site ie. by the main page or forum pages or the active topics.
That said, I still believe that Kmns has made a valid observation on the activity levels within the forum, which may suggest that many if not most go to the Cayman Chat as the only place. I guess without seeing the server logs it is hard to make an exact determination on access patterns - have you done any work on the server logs to see the access patterns and do they show something that is not obvious just by reading the site ?
I have been a member of the Cayman club almost from its inception. I love the site and visit it almost on a daily basis, and on some days many times. It has turned into a fellowship of members that has gone beyond the car itself, although the car is the glue that keeps all this together and the focal point.
I agree that the Active Topics feature is a great tool, and has great value. That being said, we all would agree that most members and visitors routinely jump on the Chat forum to see what's happening and from there, if interest or time allows, may check out the other forums. Given that at any given visit we all have varying degrees of discretionary time on our hands, most of us get involved catching up with topics on the Chat forum, and often will get their Caymanclub fix there.
Here is the irony of the separate forums. Most of them were created because the topic represented a popular and often discussed issue. By placing these most popular issues on a separate forum right away, much of what would have been read and addressed by many is often overlooked by most visitors.
Once again, I think that we are well served to see certain posts eventually migrate to their relevant Forum. I see a benefit, however, and no harm, in allowing members to post their topics in the Chat Forum if they choose to initially. At some later time, they can be moved, or if possible, enable the author to move the topic to the relevant forum.
This site provides an endless source of entertainment, advice, knowledge, and instant responses from friends on issues that would otherwise have to wait til the next day when it could take hours trying to track down and get an answer from a dealer rep. I'm sure I speak for many in offering my thanks for the time and effort given by K-Man-S to make all this possible.

One should note RedRocket’s take on this.

Well then it sounds like everyone is in agreement that topics should be moved, the only question is 'when'. I don't want to have to craft some iron-clad rule about number of replies, number of views or hours/minutes/seconds since originally posted, so let's leave it to the admin/moderators discretion that if a topic is one that needs to be moved and isn't 'overly active' at the moment in the Chat forum then it is ok to go ahead an move it, again leaving overly active to the discretion of the admin or moderator.
