There are two ways you can type in a link:
1) Type in the link directly, for example
http://www.thisismylink.com
You MUST type a space after typing the link so that the editor will auto-convert the link to an active link. See the following two pictures. In the first I have not yet typed a space, in the second I have typed a space after the link and it becomes active.

2) The second way to enter a link is to enter a word or words you want to become the hyperlink, highlight those words, click the link button, fill in the URL information and click OK. Here are some pics showing how to do so.
First you need to type in a word or words and highlight them as shown in this picture:

Next you will need to click on the Hyperlink Button to bring up the pop-up window that allows you to fill in the information about the hyperlink or choose the hyperlink type.

The following pop-up window will appear, and I have filled in ficticious information for a hyperlink. If you want to hyperlink to some page on the web simply paste that page's URL in this pop-up window.

Once done click the OK button and you are finished. The text you highlighted will be converted to an active URL that people can click on to visit that address. The result would be similar to the following:
