I work 2 blocks from Grand Central and was walking to my train home just before 6pm yesterday when I heard and felt a deep rumbling sound that I thought at first was thunder... but it didn't stop. I had just been approaching the corner of Lexington Ave from 43rd St and suddenly saw a wall of people running towards me from Lex. (This may be the most appropriate use of an eek emoticon I've ever had:

) I decided that they probably had the right idea and turned around and started walking - quickly - away from the area.
For about half an hour no one knew what had happened and all assumed the worst. Gridlock, people running on the streets, cellphones clutched to their faces, sirens, honking, madness. Some people were splattered in mud. I walked about a mile north to a cousin's apartment where the news was starting to break that it wasn't as nefarious as a subway bombing, which many had initially feared, but was rather "just" a steampipe explosion. I heard that trains were remarkably still running, so walked downtown to the north entrances to Grand Central and around 53rd St and Madison spotted a black Cayman at the light. Feeling glad to be alive, I approached the driver, whose door was open, and asked if he was from Cayman Club. He gave me strange look, New Yorkers dont start conversations with random drivers. I explained that I had a Cayman myself and there was a great Cayman enthusiast site online and... Again, strange looks and he slowly drove off. I think I scared him
Anyway, strange day.
