I might be moving from CA to MA in a few months. I plan to purchase a 08 CS in the Bay Area and drive it cross country to MA.
Question: Will I get double taxed (sales) when I transfer the registration from CA to MA? (I will have already paid sales tax in CA. Will Taxachusetts try to ding me again?)
Here in NY (Land of Taxes) you just pay your registration fee- as long as you have proof that you paid the sales tax when and where you bought the car. I'd look here:
Think twice about the move... I did it in Jan 1988 and returned to CA in Aug 1992. Job related, of course... but if you're born/raised in CA, like me and my family, it's a big culture change...won't comment on good/bad...but very, very different. You may (like my family) find it difficult to fit in.
Research carefully.... especially the community where you may live. We blew it...should have lived in Boston. IMHO, the farther from Boston you get, the harder it will be for you.
An so the MA folks don't jump on me, my advice applies in the other direction too. You really need to investigate the community...

I lived there for 5 years (1994-1999), but I don't remember the sales tax bit for "imported" cars. You can search this site: Massachusetts RMV - 2008 News for additional information. Here's a paragraph from that site re your situation:
If while a resident of another state your vehicle was either purchased and registered in that state for more than six (6) months or purchased in Massachusetts more than six (6) months ago but was delivered to you out of Massachusetts by the seller, you are exempt from paying Massachusetts sales tax. When registering a vehicle purchased in Massachusetts that was delivered to another state, you must submit a copy of the bill of sale or dealer invoice, and a copy of your Letter of Delivery, which must be signed under the pains and penalties of perjury. The Letter of Delivery must include all of the following information:
* The name, address, and telephone number of the seller
* The name of the person who delivered the vehicle
* The date the vehicle was delivered
* The address to which the vehicle was delivered
* The name of the person who took delivery of the vehicle
* The vehicle’s odometer reading before and after the delivery
* The method of delivery (e.g., driven by salesperson, on seller’s truck)
* The signature of the seller or an authorized representative if a dealer
And I can tell you that you're in for a shock with auto insurance rates. They're almost as high as NJs, and because the insurance rates and drivers rating have state involvement, it's very hard to shop prices. There was a discount at some insurance companies for AAA membership, as well as MADD membership, but this may not still apply. There's also some manner of personal property tax, based on MA's determination of value.
Are you saying that those outside of Boston are Inbreeds?
No... not at all... you must be confusing MA with another US state where the question often asked is: "If a man and woman divorce, are they still brother and sister?"

Wow, talk about reading into things! I took his post to simply mean that lifestyles in general between the CA and MA areas would be dramatic. Never once did I think he was saying family trees looked like a straight line. LOL
Of course being from "the South" I hear references to those types of things all the time. From what I have learned in my world travels.....every spot on earth is full of every type of person. In other words....no area is immune. So be careful where you point assumptions.
All in good fun I know.

Being a CA resident, I will not be able to buy the car here, drive it across, and re-register it in MA...I'll get taxed again in MA. The attraction of buying a '08 CS in the Bay Area is because dealers are offering deep discounts (1% to 2% over invoice). I hope the same will be true in MA.
I have spent many years in MA. I like the place. Personally for me, it is difficult to say that CA is better than MA or vice versa -- they both have their good and not so good.
