Can anyone suggest a friendly Porsche dealership that will allow a reasonable test drive? I live in Great Neck, NY, which is near the NYC/Long Island border. I'm willing to drive 100 miles to get a good test drive.
On a related note, I don't suppose anybody would be willing to give me a ride in your Cayman S?
Replying to my own post here, but maybe this will be useful to others.
I had a great dealership experience from Eric at Porsche of Roslyn. I was able to get a good, long test drive and a bunch of my questions answered. I haven't decided yet if I am going to join you guys as a CS owner, but I'm extremely tempted.
A reasonable test drive in a CS is say 10 miles. It should have the following:
1. On-ramp - somewhere where you can have full-on accelleration through a few gears.
2. Highway to get a feel of 4th, 5th & 6th
3. A real curvy road to be able to toss the car about.
4. Someplace to test the brakes.
An hour is way more time than needed to test this car. An hour is a joy ride. First the prom, then the dessert.

Cayman S - a portable amusement park
I just noticed in the spotter thread that you picked up a new Cayman yesterday, congrats! Did you pick this up at the Roslyn dealership? I was just there this past Saturday and was surprised at the number of 2006 Cayman S they still had on the lot.
On a related note, does anyone here have recommendations on which dealers / salespeople in the area you've had good experiences with? I'm in Staten Island can have no problems dealing with anyone within a 75-mile radius. With the amount of dealerships in our area, the amount ofchoices can be a bit overwhelming!
So far it appears that Ray Catena in Edison, NJ seems to have the best word of mouth. I'm not looking for the absolute rock bottom price, just a fair one. Of course their service department should also be top notch.
I'm still about 4 months away from placing an order. My unscientific approach so far has been to stop by any dealerships I happen to be close to just to drool and chat with the salesfolk. I'm happy to say that so far I've had no bad vibes from the local dealers so far even though I'm fairly young and dressed in shorts/jeans plus a t-shirt most of the time.
Please chime in with any recommendations!
-Pete

Thanks, Pete. Yes, I got my CS at Porsche of Roslyn, though not from their lot. The experience there was excellent other than dealing with the 'finance manager' guy. If you saw an Atlas Grey on Saturday, that was my car.
Congrats to you too surphr! Wow, lots of new local owners the last few days.
I take it you were happy with Catena, was it strictly MSRP or were they flexible? I assume they were flexible since it was on the floor already. I'll probably end up ordering due to all the specific items I would like.
Put some photos up if you have them!
On a related note, has the insurance been reasonable for this car?

Sorry for the late replies; I've been out of town (drove the CS to Atlanta and back -- w00t!).
I have to admit I did not get a good price, but then again, I did not really try either, since I was in a rush to buy. I paid slightly under MSRP. I'm sure you can do much better if you're willing to spend some time on the process. In my case, I was afraid that the car they found for me would get sold to someone else. In fact, the Lapis Blue that was my top choice did disappear before I got my deposit in; regardless I'm very happy with the Atlas Grey I have now.
Insurance has been about where I expected it. I'm paying about 30% more for the CS than I was for my RX-8. For me with my shoddy record and other negative factors (age 31, single, male), that works out to about $2200/year.
Hope that helps.

Thanks ark. I'm not in any great rush due to the winter coming up - but would still like to place the order. I see that Silver Star was renamed Porsche of Roslyn one year ago (it was sold). I know someone who gets their leased car there every 3 years - pays more - but it's convenient for them. I've looked at a dealership in Huntington - the guy was super but we didn't get down to final pricing yet. Thanks for the reply.

I know this is a bit after the original posts, but I just joined
First, I do not own a Porsche, and I've put an age restriction on myself before I will let myself get one. 2 More years to go. But I've always wanted one, in two years I will own one. I've wanted a C4S for the longest time, but recently started considering the Cayman as well.
Anyways, I found myself at Ray Catena one day. I just stopped in randomly to pick up some brochures and take a look. I'm 23 years old, dressed in my jeans and T-Shirt I looked like I was 17 years old. I was greeted when I walked in and Sandy immediately came up to me. There wasn't any stigmas or any immediate push. He answered all my questions I had and spent a lot of time with me outside looking at the car. If Sandy is still there in 2 years, I will purchase my first Porsche from him.
On the flip side, Paul Miller Porsche on Rt 46. My friend brough his C4S in for service and I accompanied him to drop off the car. When we got there, I stepped in the showroom while he was getting his stuff done. I was completely ignored when I walked in. I walked over to a salesman and asked if they had any Lapis Blue cars on the lot. (I've never seen the color in person, and wanted to get a look.) He told me I can feel free to look around in the showroom. Not having an answer to my question, I said to him "So you don't have any?" Upon which he replied "These Porsche's are custom ordered for colors." Again, that wasn't an answer to a question I asked. I got fed up and gave up on him. When we were leaving, I told my friend what just happened and he told me he spotted a Lapis Blue Boxster in the back. Would it have taken too much time for him to at least answer me appropriately

Sorry about your experience. Everyone deserves respect unless they are rude to others. I had a similar issue with a dealer in Hartford, CT. It was likely associated with other visible attributes associated with me.
My advice is to not spend your money with someone who does not respect you. Plenty of dealers in northeast.
Look forward to the day in 2 years when you post a picture of your new CS.
