Today was a much more satisfying experience at a different dealer. My wife and I went in for a scheduled test drive and drove the Cayman and Cayman S back to back. Both cars were tiptronic and had standard wheels.
I was impressed with the Cayman. It had an easy feel, i.e., soft ride, and felt light and nimble. It felt like a car I could drive every day. The acceleration was decent. In all honesty, probably enough for us.
The Cayman S was also impressive. It had a more firm, heavier feeling than the base Cayman, plus a bit more power. The cabin noise seemed a bit louder, although strangely enough, from outside it sounded quieter than the base Cayman when my wife drove off.
I have yet to drive either Cayman with 19" wheels, but that is my next step. We have our color choices narrowed down pretty well. It basically comes down to base or S, and depending on which one, which options to get.
The salesman at this dealer was great. He did not ask one single "salesman-like" question. It was purely a test drive. He was extremely helpful and respectful of our time.
In closing, regarding my last post about my first test drive in a demo, bad dealer experience, I conclude that there must have been something wrong with that particular Cayman S. Today's test drives were a completely different experience and all the accolades the Cayman S has received started to make sense. Starting to get excited again!
