A GT3 crashed this weekend at the Summit Point DE. The driver and instructor were OK but the car is probably a complete loss. The driver was an acquaintance from the track and was an experienced driver in the black run group. I feel a really bad for him because I know how much he loved his car and track days. The instructor is also well known to many here but I will not mention his name.
Here are some pics:

Ouch!!! I am glad that both driver and passenger are well to drive another day. It is daid to heart a GT3 to the point of total loss. But better to lose the car than the guys.
To be that high up in the air, something major went wrong, mechanical failure, miscalculation, etc. The important thing is that both occupants were OK and walked away. If you can share more details of how it happened please do.

It happened in the "chute" between turns 4 and 5. There was a lot of speculation but the general consensus was that he carried too much speed down the chute, and then he lifted and spun. He impacted the tire wall from the rear and did a complete 360-degree airborne spin down the wall 10 feet in the air. After landing, he continued to spin another 180 degrees. The fact that he impacted the wall at an angle instead of directly probably saved him from serious injury/death. The car absorbed most of the energy as it spun down the wall.

I am not familiar with the track...but this image makes it look like high speeds to me...then going into 4-5 slowing down a lot. Wow.

Miscalculation and speed. The crash happened on Saturday. At the driver's meeting Sunday morning they emphasized getting the car "settled" by tapping the brake before the turn at 4 going down the chute. You climb a hill out of turn 3, drop down the chute and then make the turn at 4 straight on to turn 5. Most are coming down the hill at over 100 mph and brake briefly before making the turn at 4 -- but some do no brake until apporaching turn 5. Here is a brief video I made showing turns 3-5 and the chute:

That corner is a very high speed corner, in low HP cars some don't even lift before the turn, in higher HP cars it is a quick tap and turn.

Here is some video of the actual crash. You will see the silver GT3 pass the camera car between turn 2 -3 and then proceed at high speed up the hill and down the chute where he goes off.
