Charleston vs Greenville SC dealer

Hi guys!

Throw a newbie a bone.

I'm getting ready to look for a p-car CPO from either Baker in Charleston or the dealer in Greenville SC (whatever it called).

Any advice of one of these dealers over the other?

Thanks!!!

Full disclosure: I want a Cayman but my wife is next up and she wants a 997, what's a guy to do?

I have no experience with the Greenville dealer but I am familiar with Baker. I bought my first Porsche (Boxster) from Baker and I paid top $$$. I like the dealership but when I decided to get the CS they were not even in the ballpark of the deal I got from Hennessy. They are a small dealership with limited inventory so you will be lucky to find even a single CPO CS, let alone having a choice. If you do go to Baker, talk to Richard Hungate.

I would also look at Hendrick in Charlotte. I got mine there and they were good guys and I could not find it cheaper anywhere else.

Thanks guys.

Hendrick would be with in reason but might be a long way for service. I live in Spartanburg so Greenville is easy and I have a house in Charleston as well.

I drove from Asheville (which has a Porsche dealer) and purchased my car from the Greenville Dealer. I had a pleasant experience and I had known more questions to ask, I would have likely been a little more in control with the purchase. I was a little smitten and swept away, as I just walked on the lot and purchased from the show room floor. The dealer didnt really take me serious. It was the weekend and I believe I spoke with the sales manager. In any case, he was attentive, but seemingly from a distance (stand offish). It was not until he quoted me financing rates, and I questioned how he knew the rates if it was the weekend. He said he would need to wait until Monday to confirm. So I asked him if I had to wait until Monday to buy the car....

He shot straight up in his seat and said "Are you interested in buying the car today?" I said "if you can confirm the rates today."

Two hours later, I was on my way back to Asheville in my CS.

I think they were fair, they spent time going over the car...etc. But I didnt shop the price. To this day, I think my price is better than most. But that is all based on options. I have a "S" with heated seats, Bose, and 18" wheels. Otherwise it is pretty basic.....if you want to call it that. I love the car!

I cannot speak for the other dealer you mention.

I too live in Asheville. I have been shopping for months, having been to dealerships in AVL; Greenville, SC; Hickory; Kingsport, TN; Charlotte; and Greensboro.

I was underwhelmed by the inventory in Greenville, but they were very nice, though I also thought they seemed disinterested. I asked a couple of questions about options that they couldn't answer, and though they promised to call me back, they never did. That crossed them off my list.

After submitting my options configurator to several dealers to custom order, Carrie Walker at Hendrick in Charlotte, Brett Smith in Hickory, and Keith Nowlin in Greensboro seemed the most competitive on pricing.

All dealerships were professional, respectful, and low-pressure. They have a marque that sells itself, so no one should need to push someone to buy a Porsche.

Just my 2 cents, and YMMV. BTW, the plunge will be taken in the next 10 days.

Good luck,

John Cuellar

First find which dealer has the car you want, get some comps and make them an offer. In the long run you will be happier with the car you want than a "great deal" on one you don't.

My 2 cents worth- I live in charlotte- Tried 3 times to buy from hendrick. Very disapointed with them at that time- mar-may 07. They were completely out of the ballpark and would not return phone calls or offer any deals whatsoever. I gave them the last look before buying because I live 5 miles from them. I told them that I could buy a new CS for 9500.00 off sticker in Roanoke Va. They looked at me like I was crazy. That was 10:00 sat morning. At 5:00 that afternoon I was driving my new CS back to Charlotte with an extra 9k in my pocket on a 65k CS.Greenvile or charleston had no inventory at the time i bought. I would strongly suggest you check with Roanoke Porsche before you buy. Lots of CPO inventory-particulary 997s- the last time I was there. very happy with my deal.

In fairness to hendrick I have since seen discounted prices posted on cars on the lot. I have posted the prices on this board and several members have bought them. The parts dept is decent and the service dept is very good so far. The new sales department didnt impress me.

I too was unimpressed with the selection in Greenville but they just happened to have a car I liked. Plus in the end they discounted the cost very deeply....
