I got some gas for the Cayman after church. I still haven't found any diesel for my wife's car but with three-quarters of a tank she can still go for at least 300 more miles.
I don't know anything about price capping* but I do think that limited availability makes us happy to pay any price just to get gas.

*Alex, I'm not saying that you are wrong. I am saying that I don't know anything about it.
Interesting....you can find diesel at almost any station here in Asheville.
I have a friend who is in the gas business and he is saying that the threat of being accused of price gouging has really constricted negotiations between wholesalers and retailers to the point that (not sure about this moment) in some cases there are fully loaded tankers sitting waiting on retailers to pay a premium for the gas, but retailers are afraid to pay $4.25-4.50 a gallon and then mark it up to $5.00 and get slapped by the NC Attorney General. I know this to be the case immediately after the hurricanes, but before the complete disappearance of gas from stations. (if I believe what I am told).
I am relieved to say that the Exxon by our office had 93 octane back in today and I filled up upon leaving for home. Feels reassuring to have the 87 out or mostly diluted out at this point.
Things are still screwed up in the big sewer-- er sorry -I mean the big city of Charlotte. I was fortunate through the whole mess as one station near me had 93 octane- at $4.29 only moderately long lines- only a few days with no gas- and no 87??? .. go figure. Our wonderful folks at city hall realized that there was a problem ..LAST WEEK and promsed to investigate. If it was a property tax increase of some stupid basketball arena or a NASCAR museum.. you can bet your @ss they would be front and center on the problem -pronto!!!! I don't think that I have ever been so Pi$$ed off at the local govt as I have because of their total stupidity and lack of assistance in this matter. They actually blamed people for topping off and driving too much!!!!!! I did have to run 6 gallons of 87 mixed with my tank of 93. I threw in some Lucas octane booster- no problem.
We have 87 pertty much everywhere but 93 is still scarce as of this morning-lots of bags on nozzles.
This just in from WBTV news . . . The rednecks in Taylorsville are pulling guns on each other. They just showed one goober and his dad get hauled off to jail.
We had the gun pulling /breaking in line here as well- not the redneck variety in this case. I will leave it at that.
I have been reading all the post from all the folks that went to Croctoberfest. And I could not believe that they could not find any gas. I live in Central Florida and we have not had a shortage of gas. As a matter of fact gas in many places is down to 3.20 a gallon.
Dang, I feel for all you guys in the Carolina's. Similar to what greycroc said, the same goes here in North Florida (Jacksonville) for our gas prices. Not once has there been a shortage or line, prices are $3.29, $3.39 and $3.49 respectfully.
You would think that they could figure out how to do some "re-routes" for tankers to help you guys out. Hopefully everything will get back to normal for you.

I agree but I am even more pi$$ed off at the local news. They were the ones who kept hyping the "shortage". And to make matters worse they are doing it again. This morning they were warning about all the "out-of-towners" who were coming in for the big NASCAR race next weekend and how much gas they might use. So I wouldn't be a bit surprised if people made another run on the gas stations.

I was able to get premium this morning so the Cayman never had to make due with regular. The Ducati actually runs better (and gets better mileage) on regular . . . . even though Ducati calls for premium.

Atlanta had a shortage as well.....but premium could be found. Just not easily. At some stations, REGULAR was over $4.50/gal!

+1 on the media hype causing problems- particualrry WBTV channel 3 in Charlotte. Their stock in trade is scaring elderly people with storm warnings and now this. We are definitely getting screwed big time. I hear stories of buddies in other cities buying 93 for less than 3.75 and 87 for 3.20. We are still paying 3.80-3.95 for 87 and whatever they want to charge for 93.
The Zone 1 & 2 caravan got a firsthand look at the situation last Thursday when we had to run around and look for gas for a late arrival. We had to break the caravan up to make it down to Atlanta. Those running a bit low took off for Atlanta while others waited on line at the one station we found to fill up.
I found 93 in Buford for $4.40 a gal but that's still much cheaper than NYC prices.
