SE MI Dealership Experiences

Just wondering whether anyone has had any noteworthy (good and bad) experiences with dealerships in SE MI... I have taken my CS exclusively to Bill Cook/Suburban Porsche in Novi, but I just scheduled an OEM short-throw shifter install with Howard Cooper in AA. Suburban wanted nearly $1000(!) for parts+labor while Howard Cooper quoted roughly $660 out-the-door -- which I think is actually cheaper than the factory option. Aside from "attractive" pricing, Phil in the service department was extremely friendly and accommodating, which was a refreshing contrast.
I doubt I'll ever go to Suburban again, based on my and friends' past experiences. Does anyone have tips for getting a fair(er) shake at these places? The other dealership within striking distance for me is Fred Lavery in Troy, but I have had no interaction with them other than getting a quote on the shifter install (they were in the middle).
Thanks.
