Is anyone going to the event on the 10/11th of Feb at TMS?
Never been to TMS and not really a fan of what I've seen in videos.
Do you ever do DEs at MSR? There's a PCA event at the end of February.

This will actually be my first DE event. I have done some autocrossing in the past and attended Skip Barber about 5 yrs ago at Laguna Seca and then did a couple lapping days at Sebring. Where is MSR located? Do you run different wheels/tires for the DE's?

MSR is in Cresson, TX. It's about twenty minutes south west of Fort Worth:
I currently have an M3, but, yes, I use different tires and wheels. The theory is you should do maybe 6 DEs on street tires and then move to R-compounds.
Cool that you did the Skip Barber school, that should help you out a lot.
plan to stop by and view the goings on this weekend, check on Cayman brethren
who will be at the DE?
objectuser,
never been to TMS but you should definitely drive TWS in College Station, it's fun!!!

I did TMS during the Porsche Parade in Ft. Worth three years ago, and it was a blast - I had my 996 Twin Turbo then, and was hitting 160 down the front straight after a slingshot off the banking. The infield road course is actually harder to do correctly than it looks, and doing the last hairpin back onto the banking is crucial to good lap times. If they have the tire-chicane at the end of the front straight, it's a hairy moment to get through there well, and still carry momentum through the rest of the high banking. And, the hairpin at the end of the banking and going into the infield will test your mettle in the threshold braking department... all in all, a challenging and good time.
I'm pretty sure this weekend's DE will be at Texas World Speedway at College Station, not Texas Motor Speedway. Myself, I will be snowboarding in Vail.

I am not registered to drive but was planning to go up there just to check it out.
I got an email yesterday from the local PCA DE coordinator inviting all members to come up and see what it's all about. He says parade laps are offered during the day so you can get out on the track and see for yourself. My friend with the older Turbo has done the parade laps a couple of times and says depending on the leader, you might actually get to build up a little speed.

I roadraced motorcycles off and on for over 20 years, many times at TWS. Most car tracks are designed specifically WITH barriers, the intent being to keep cars from coming off the track into spectator areas. Motorcycles (or mostly practice courses like Cresson) prefer to have run off room. Spectator areas are situated along straightaways with walls kept to a minimum. I have had 3 friends die at TWS since 1981, two in the same corner coming from the infield back onto the banking, one in the carousel coming from the back part of the track back to the horseshoe. The track is now using Airfence for motorcycle races (not sure if they leave it up all the time) but two people were still serious injured in that corner last year submarining under the fence.
My reluctance to DE my car is the however remote possibility of wadding it up into the ARMCO. I know from my motorcycle days that you can be as careful and cautious as can be, but can't always avoid the mistakes of others, be it spinning out in front of you, or spilling all their oil. I plan to get up to one of the DE's as soon as I can and take some parade laps, see how my confidence/fear factor is before investing in the school.
