I am in the market for a 07/08 Cayman- if anyone has any references for a good salesman I would appreciate it- currently I am shopping:
Carrera Motors- Bend,OR
Barrier Porsche- Bellevue,WA
R.Larson's Porsche- Tacoma, WA
I am in Portland,OR. I will not do business with Sunset Motors which is located in Portland- due to poor reports from some co-workers in my company.
Thanks!
Brad900-
I have had nothing but good experiences with Sunset Imports, particularly their service department. Was it the porsche side of Sunset imports that you heard poor things about?
I must admit that I do not have a ton of experience with them as I have only had my Cayman since May, but we did have a problem with an add on product that they sold me called ToughGuard and they have bent over backwards to make sure I am happy.
That all said, you probably could get a better deal from another dealer as I only got 4-5% off MSRP when I ordered my car in January.
From what I have been told they do not accept trade-ins of any sort, and they denied a good friend of mine a test drive (to their own detriment as he went out and bought a new M3 based on the experience)!
If you're willing to consider Silicon Valley, I had the best new car buying experience of my life (and I'm an old f***) with Tom McAfee at Steven Creek Porsche. I'll offer any assisitance you may need on the local front if you're interested. Their finance team was wonderful too...no pressure...just the facts...well explained. I did a 2 year lease. You can call my cell 650-222-6937
Cheers
Bob

I also ordered my car (Nov '07 build) from Craig @ Sunset. He has been very responsive and helpful even though I have never met him in person. I live down in Southern Oregon and they gave me a better deal than Bend. He did say they accepted trade-ins if I wanted to go that route. I test drove one in Bend.
I faced a similar situation as you do. There are limited dealers in Oregon and therefore not much competition. I thought about purchasing from an out of state dealer but that meant either shipping it to my home ($1000+) or having to rent a truck/trailer and then driving it back up to my house. Those costs pretty much offset the savings of buying from California. And then having the trouble of personally registering it at the DMV. If you buy it out of state, they won't let you drive it off the lot without paying the sales tax. (You have to put it on a trailer.) At least that is what I have been told.....
I am willing to travel where ever I need to to get the best deal- and to be honest it might be a great vaca for me and my girl to take a flight down to Cali- buy the car and then enjoy the ride home!
I am going to give Craig a call tomorrow though based on these referrals- would either of you (gms or Cay'07) be willing to PM me your names so that I can give you guys the proper credit?
Brad: I believe you have a special situation living in Oregon.
Most States including California & Washington have strict tax & license rules based on where the car first hits the road. If you pick-up a Cayman in California or Washington and drive it back yourself, you will have to pay sales tax and license fees for either State respectively. You would have the option of having the car trucked to you in Portland with a Manufacturers Certificate or Origin, which would allow you to license the car in Oregon without having to pay the substantially higher fees in CA or WA.
I would definitely second the recommend on talking to Roger Jobs. I didn't buy my car there, but in my limited experience with them I have found them very candid and helpful. I am sure that they would give you a clear assessment of your options for buying out of State.
Also, I've purchased 2 cars from my salesman down in the Bay Area including the Cayman. I would recommend him highly; Louis Krstal at Porsche of Fremont, 510-623-1111. Best wishes on your search.
While traveling on business I stopped by the P-car dealer in Reno. The salesperson indicated a sizable portion of their sales are to out of state clients in CA (no real surprise) and folks in Oregon and Washington. Since a majority of the cars are ordered, the negotiation comes down to price and delivery date. When the car arrives the dealer picks up the client from the airport, paperwork is signed and the client drives the car home. I have no knowledge of their pricing flexibility, but it might be worth giving them a call.

I just picked up my new 2007 Cayman from Roger Jobs in Bellingham this week, and was very pleased with the entire process. The same positive comment cannot be said for the sales process at Barrier Porsche in Bellevue. The trade-in offer on my 2003 Boxster S was an insult. Roger Jobs treats customers as though they want your return business.
GRW- could you tell me who you dealt with at Roger Jobs?
If they don't meet my price locally I am going to drive up there and see what they have- I know they already have a nice silver S priced somewhat aggressively so I may just have to check them out.
I dealt with Nick Leader, Salesman, to evaluate the car, and the Sales Manager, Byron Sprague to negotiate the final price. Nick is fairly new at sales, having just finished his BA at Western Wash University, but he worked his way up through the dealership from detailing, so he intimately knows these cars. Rogers Jobs Porsche dealership is smaller than Barrier Porsche, so their overhead is lower. Good luck in your search.
You might talk to Carol over the phone at Roger Jobbs ...she gave me the of the record that she'll have some deals coming up at the end of the month...(see my post in sales on dealer incentives...Big learning experience!) I really like Dennis at Barrier, but i think those guys are more hand cuffed to what Barrier will allow them to do...
Let me know if you ahve any questions about the whole "punched into service cars" issue.
I am picking up an '07 CS new (27 miles) in S cal for 51.5 on Friday MSRP was 59K (no options)
Oh....and don't worry about the out of state thing either.....I'm registered in Oregon as well....No big deal.. just have a utility bill or fishing/hunting license, your ODL and current ins. That's all any dealer in wa. needs to let you drive away in your new car.
Cal. has to deliver the car across the border....I have to pick mine up in Yuma this week before I can head north with it. kind of a pain..
