I've taken my 993 to Modderman in mt view and they are pretty good, but any recommendations for the south bay or pennisula?

Ned - my is too new to be serviced, but i would probably take it back to Rector in Burlingame. I will need to consider a oil change before their recommended 20K.

I'm new to Porsches and will be getting my CS in September. I was also trying to find a Porsche Indy in the South Bay area in the event I wanted to do some modifying of my car. I went to the PCA site and they have a list of Porsche repair businesses which they postwith the appropriate disclaimer but I have no idea how to determine which if any is the right one to go with.

I have not used them for service yet, but I've checked them out and will be using Carlson in Redwood City. It's also where I ordered my vehicle from. It's my 5th Porsche so I was careful with my assessment of both mechanical and sales cusomer service. They are located just north of the Marsh Road exit from 101, about two blocks up the frontage road and on the left. Drop in and check them out.

When you ask this question, you have to distinguish between mods and regular maintenance. Mods are specialty items. For instance Tony C at TC Design Fab can't be beat as far as setting up suspensions and roll cages, but I'm not sure he is the man to see for HP/power mods. Jerry Wood may be a better choice. But then the Cayman S is such a new car that may be at this point, only the acknowledged tuners should be trusted for power mods.


As far regular maintenance, then Bob Grigsby, Devek, Don Wise etc. are all wonderful shops. Not to say that they don't do mods well,but still the Cayman S is a very new car.

CP, you're right, I need to distinguish between maintenance and mods. I was curious about maintenance for porsches. I've been reasonably satisfied with Modderman and was curious if others have had particularly good experiences with local shops.

For maintenance on your new CS, I would second recommendation of Carlsen off 101 @ Marsh Rd. in Redwood City. they've done it on the last two new cars I've had, a 1999 996 and a 1001 996 Turbo. Their service writers know what their talking about, and they have very good service. They also sponsor the GGR/PCA autocross series, and I like to take my businees to local PCA sponsors. I also ordered my CS through them and bought my previous new cars there, too.



For older cars or mods for your CS, I would very highly recommend Jerry Woods in Campbell - particularly for suspension set up and engine mods. Jerry was the builder and re-builder of the turbo engines in the 935s, 956s, and 962s, that were unbeatable at Le Mans and all IMSA races in the mid-1970s through the 1980s. Talk to Rich Walton there. They will also do regular 'ol mainttenance on your new/old car as well. Personally, I consider them to be the best shop in the area.



I used Tony Hyer - his shop is called Hyer performance - on Old MIddlefield Rd. in Mountain View to work on my older 911s. He was the chief mechanic at Garretson Enterprises, back in the 1980s, and is one of the best Porsche mechanics in the biz today.



Another good shop is Reitmeir's Werkstat in Los Altos, Jeff and his dad have been there for a long time. and are long time members and supporters of Golden Gate region of PCA. I've not used them, but many Porsche people I know and respect get their cars worked on there and couldn't be happier.

The problem with the Bay Area is that there are *too many* excellent service establishments for Porsche. I took my old '79 911SC to Moddermans in the early 90's and had really great service. I had David do the sports wheel replacement on my Cayman and he recommended Carlsen when I had a warranty job and they were really excellent. I just had an aligment & camber adjustment done at Reitmeirs and Jeff knows a great deal about setting cars up for tracking. I'm sure I'll try Jerry Woods next!! I don't think you can go wrong with any of the recommendations in this thread.

I found a very respectable Porsche repair and Service shop in Campbell between San Jose and Los Gatos. They seem to have a pretty fair knowledge of the computer systems and programming for the cars. I put new Techart 19's on my 996 and the traction control began having issues. The guys over there sorted it out quickly. I just know they have the Porsche software that is needed to get into the darn things to reset things.

I've been using Modderman in Mountain View exclusively since 1975 when I moved into the area. Back then it was three brothers, David's dad and siblings. David bought the business from his uncle and his first project was the rebuild of the engine in my 356 in the early '80s. They've serviced my 914, two 911's and my 356 over that period....I think they've very good. I agree, there are many in the area, due to the abundance of Porsches here in Silicon Valley. It comes down to personal relations, who do you trust, etc.

David has never been a big proponent of after market stuff...maybe exhauts, but not much beypond that. But, he races (944 I think???) and is a part of a racing pit crew and knows his performance stuff.
