MONTEREY SPORTS CAR CHAMPIONSHIPS OCTOBER 20-22



The Monterey Sports Car Championships will feature a four-hour American Le Mans Series race into the evening on Saturday, October 21 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, but fans returning for the final day of the October 20-22 event will find plenty to see and do as the SPEED World Challenge GT and Touring classes, IMSA GT3 Cup, Star Mazda Series and Super Stars of Super Karts will help provide world-class racing throughout the fall classic. As the last race of the season for the American Le Mans Series, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca hosts teams that don't run the full season schedule. Last year's Monterey Sports Car Championship winning team, the Zytek 06S, is expected to defend their race title. The Creation team will bring their LMP1 Judd to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the first time in two years after a successful European season, and Autocon Motorsports is expected to enter the ex-Dyson Lola. In LMP2, the European-based Horag/Lista Racing Lola Judd finished on the podium the previous round, and could challenge around the twists and turns of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.


The stars of the show will be the familiar faces. The Audi R10 TDI turbo diesel continues to marvel, running undefeated in its inaugural season in the ultra-quiet, clean-running engineering marvel. The Penske Porsche team made their debut a year ago at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and has clinched the 2006 team championship. A hard crash forced them to miss a few races and knocked them out of championship contention, but the Mazda Courage is sure to challenge at their 'home' track.


In GT1, the two Corvettes and two Aston-Martins have been locked into a duel all season, with no change expected for the Monterey Sports Car Championships. GT2 has been tight all year, with wins coming from Porsche, Panoz, BMW and Ferarri this season. Don't miss the on-track action, running into the evening on Saturday, October 21. FAN ACTIVITIES FOR ALL AGES AT MAZDA RACEWAY LAGUNA SECA

The fan activities at the Monterey Sports Car Championships mean there's no need to leave anyone at home. Oktoberfest at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, located in Yamaha Marketplace, provides entertainment for all ages. Crafts, games and activities geared specifically for the kids will keep them occupied during a day at the track, and the Sierra Nevada beer garden will provide tired adults with a break of their own.



The weekend activities actually begin with a trip to the Bay area on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Klein Tools Pit Stop Challenge will pit the BK Motorsports Mazda prototype against the Flying Lizard Porsche 911 in a pit stop competition in downtown San Francisco on Tuesday, October 17. Mini Le Mans of San Jose presented by Sunoco will see a host of American Le Mans Series, SPEED World Challenge, IMSA GT3 and Star Mazda racecars running around Cesar Chavez park in downtown San Jose.
