I am going back to GT Pro in Fullerton Saturday December 8th to test a new exhaust system and was wondering if anyone of you would like to get his car dynoed as well. ???
We start at 10:00 (or even earlier) and go from there…
I used GT Pro 3 times now and their work is really great (BBI Autosport will be using them from here on as well).
Price is $150 for 3 pulls. If several people show up we might get the price further down.
GT Pro told me if we get 3 cars the price would be $125 (each)…
With all these autocrosses and track events I read about from the SoCal crowd I am surprised
we do not see more enthusiasts motivated "testing" their cars…

Maybe it’s just me, maybe my German background, but whenever we changed something on our cars (had a Callaway twin turbo) before we hit the Nurburgring we got the cars dynoed. Only way to find out if the adjustments really provided the expected changes… In this case, modding our Cayman’s involves much less money, but nonetheless, still like to know if $500, or $5000 investments for bolt on mods (which claim certain HP/Torques gains) are justified. I am in for this to have fun and share the experience with other enthusiasts…

I completely understand your logic for checking the performance delta from modifications on a dyno. If I were making engine modifications I would certainly be interested in the testing, as I am sure it is fun to see the physical change. While not German, I am an engineer by degree (certainly not by practice any more).
My lack of interest likely results from the fact that most of us who track the car competitively are not making any engine modifications. The only thing that bumps you up a class or two as fast as engine mods is a spring change (ask CCC4321). This includes intake and exhaust changes and the addition of headers just kill you in some organizations. Add to that fact that a good driver in a stock Boxster or Cayman will go right past a 997S or GT3 with a lesser driver.
The current modifications to my car are mostly reliability related (sump extension & windage tray, pulley, 3rd radiator) and the upcoming changes will only help me turn (control arms, anti-roll bars, tires) or keep me safer (roll bar, seats, harness).
What I do not completely understand (I am not saying I am right) is why many people who spend so much time and money to make there cars faster in a straight line have limited to no interest in testing the performance against the clock on a track. Just a different form of the same hobby I guess.
To me, the risk of blowing up the car from an errant engine or software modification while heavily loaded on the dyno is similar to the potential damage that can occur on the track, but like I wrote before, to each his own.
We are building a great Cayman community here in SoCal, and the POC and PCA are welcoming us with open arms, so I do hope to see you and others come on out and join us.

Wired comparison, should be always equal in my opinion. I assume you would be faster in a GT3 vs. your CS. Again, I assume.

I think the money factor is always relative, $5000, or $10,000 or whatever the amount might be, can be a lot for one, while being not really relevant to others at all… Time, I think that goes for everyone who has a hobby. I also don’t understand why people can spend days and days on the Golf court (People also don’t understand how I can go to Colorado each year for 6 weeks and to Chile in August to snowboard), but it’s a hobby and if it makes them/me/us happy, all what counts in my opinion…
What strikes me most, while I am posting here, basically sharing with those who possibly like to get their cars dynoed and haven’t had that chance yet and hoping to maybe even be of some sort of assistance to those, I am ending up talking hobbies, money and other non Dyno related items now. My own fault though. I don’t really have time for that, so done for now.

I went to GT Pro twice and have a very good impression in regards the way these guys run the facility, also had the oportunity to talk with Dennis regarding new components that are available (he returned from SEMA a couple of days prior) and also talked about upgrades not just engine but suspension and brakes as well. I had a good time and learn a lot.
